| 174397 | 2003-09-10 11:20:00 | Should I or should I not install firewall? This machine is just for normal home use with ADSL internet connection. It's quite an old PIII 500 machine and if firewall is installed, it'll slow down the machine quite a bit. Is it really necessary to install firewall like Zone Alarm? Comments, please. |

| 174398 | 2003-09-10 11:34:00 | Hi bk T, If you are using an ADSL connection, it is essential that you use a firewall, because your PC is wide open for any malicious attacks (obvious good example is the Blaster virus/worm that recently did the rounds..... A simple and quick solution is to use the integrated XP firewall if you are on that operating system, otherwise, something like ZoneAlarm, or anything fancy will do the trick just dandy. Also, you'd be surprised how little it slows your machine if and once set up properly. A lot of these firewall programs these days have good set up tutorials so you can easily put your preferences in place as to what happens. I use McAfee, and it does a great job, and is a good package. Norton is obviously very highly rated, along with the smaller, but just as effective ones like ZoneAlarm. If I recall PC World did an article recently on recommended firewalls............. Either way, install one! Craig. :D |

| 174399 | 2003-09-10 11:38:00 | Yes, essential. There are people(?) out in internet land waiting to mug unprotected users like you, they troll the net night and day with automated scans looking for vulnarabile computers, ESPECIALLY ADSL connections which are much more usable for them when attacking other computers with Denial of Service attacks. A firewall should not slow down your internet speed to any great extent, I'm on Dailup and can't see any difference. don't hesitate get as much protection as you can. | Rod ger (316) | ||

That's protecting you from the outside, but if something does bypass that, or you accidently release havoc on your computer the software firewall will hopefully stop the program reaching outside or leaving your computer open for other attacks. Also get a Antivirus Program if you haven't already. |
