174421 2003-09-10 08:57:00 My daughter is getting some abusive txt messages on her mobile phone, and on ringing Vodaphone, she was told that the messages came over the Internet and they could not tell who they were from.

I'm not to up on mobile phones, but I would have thought that any message coming over the net would have had an IP number or a return path email address in the header or have I got it all wrong??

174422 2003-09-10 09:15:00 Sorry for the double posting F1 seems even more sluggardly tonight. So as usual, because I quite often get "unlogged", I copy & pasted before trying to post. As nothing was happining I logged in again and resent. Rod ger (316)
174423 2003-09-10 09:21:00 Its likely from ICQ, or perhaps Yahoo (I think they can do it now).
It's probably just a school-friend with a grudge... but in saying that, its still not acceptable.

You could ask Vodafone to block that number, I've heard that they will do that.

You could also see about tracing the number back, as IIRC, ICQ Numbers have relevance to the number that is shown as the sender in txt messages...

Just a thought, but does anybody know the significance between ICQ Numbers and the ICE txt numbers?

174424 2003-09-10 09:23:00 No matter where the msg came from, you can trace. You need to lay a complaint with the service which sent the msg, and they can give you the details of where it originated from, and who has registered the account, etc.

174425 2003-09-10 09:30:00 Thanks Chilling,
My daughter is a bit past school days and I won't go into details, but from what you say it should be possible to trace the perpetrator one way or another?

174426 2003-09-10 09:47:00 We could all have some fun if we knew the number it was being sent from? ]:) Chilling_Silently (228)
174427 2003-09-10 10:01:00 As I said Voderphone pleaded untraceability. I was pretty sure that one way or another you should be able to get back to the ISP with a IP number and time as a minimum. Rod ger (316)
174428 2003-09-10 10:07:00 Complain to the ISP where you received the message from... if it's ICQ, then complain to them, etc... I remember MTNSMS, and I traced someone from it, etc.

I'm sure ICQ would be even easier.

174429 2003-09-10 10:46:00 The problem is to to get Voderphone to cheack back on the details. they are claiming that the Internet based messages aren't traceable! Rod ger (316)
174430 2003-09-10 10:57:00 So dont get Vodafone then...
Try going to ICQ...
All my ICQ2SMS numbers start with +8869 and are around 12 numbers long...
Any idea if this number is?
