174676 2003-09-11 12:54:00 I have been using an Optical mouse which has started to respond only intermittantly . It operates ok when I first start my computer then after varying periods the pointer starts to hesitate when I try to point to various areas with the mouse. Then suddenly the pointer just stops and wont move. If I keep moving the mouse you can see some of the boxes are responding as though having a pointer, but the pointer remains stuck in the one place on the screen.
I have changed the mouse. I have unticked startup programmes, I have started in safe mode all without any improvement.
Can anyone advise?

174677 2003-09-11 13:04:00 I don't have an optical mouse so to hazard a guess your drivers may have become corrupted. Do you have another mouse you can swap in to see how it goes? What OS are you using, have you changed any thing lately like installing programs, p2p (especially software games), changed setting in the OS (patches), hows you temprature (cpu, system/motherboard, video card)? Is it a wireless mouse?

174678 2003-09-11 21:32:00 Is it a wireless mouse? I have a wireless optical and it does what you describe when batteries are low.

174679 2003-09-11 21:40:00 Is the plug inserted firmly into its socket and not come loose somehow? Try removing the mouse drivers and reinstalling them.

When you say you changed the mouse, did you try another one of the same kind?

You could try scanning with an updated anti-virus for any nasties and give AdAware and Spybot a run as well, just to be sure.

Yes as I said I have tried a new mouse but problem is still there. My optical is not wireless so hence no battery. This evening I have been using the computer for 2 hours and apart from the pointer acting a little heisitantly, no problem, but I keep expecting the pointer to freeze again at any time.

174681 2003-09-12 15:34:00 Clean it! Check the bottom of the sensor, you'll probably find that there's a bit of dust or grit covering it. The smallest amount of dust etc over the sensor, can stop an optical mouse or cause erratic behaviour.

Amazing how many people think that because they've now got an optical mouse, they don't have to keep it clean.

174682 2003-09-15 11:35:00 I have had this problem with my optical mouse since I bought my computer from the PC Co (RIP). They suggested I uninstall and reinstall my drivers, which I did, but it still happens intermittently. I don't get any hesitation though, mine just freezes - usually when working in Word or Outlook Express. Very frustrating and no one seems to have an answer. Some on PressF1 suggested I knit it a woolly jumper! write-click (2248)
174683 2003-09-16 09:40:00 Hi Murray . . . . . . . . . . I am using Windows Me . I have tried another mouse with no improvement . I have been getting (and trying heaps of things) ifrom support emails from PC Computers ( which has now finished of course) and have also been ringing a few computer service people in Palmerston North . Some say they are stumped with this complaint which is common with Win Me or else they say uninstall everything and reinstall .
No recent Patches . Not a wireless Mouse . P\s . No cooling problems as I had a larger fan installed last year .

Thank you all those good people who have sent me advice . I am still working through .

cheers

174684 2003-09-16 09:55:00 Hi Writ-click........ My computer is also from PC Computer which I have had for 2 years and am very pleased with the performance until this problem came up. I have tried highly qualified staff from several computer companies and they can't help. I have tried everything apart from the wooly jumper. When I first start the computer it seems all right for a while, then the pointer starts to act peculiar and everything stars to go slower and if I try Outlook Express or play Spider Solitaire the pointer will suddenly freeze. But to-day I worked for a long time without this happening.

cheers Jaunty

174685 2003-09-16 10:08:00 Get rid of ME and go to 98Se if possible if not turn off the restore feature in ME and uninstall as much as you can ME functions best with very little on it .very buggy and tends to not release resources kiwibeat (304)
