only with onboard graphics. heathers isn't onboard hence it has its own ram.

174655 2003-09-13 01:24:00 Arent most Motherboards that have Shared Video RAM clever enough to let you specify in the BIOS how much you actually want shared?
Admittedly, 64MB Shared on my Family's Mobo (SiS 638 Chipset iirc) isnt even as good as those 8MB Intel OnBoard 810i chips, because its shared and not onboard.. You need to watch for that difference!

You're right too thou, the more RAM the better, especially if you're sharing 64MB.. ;-)

Gee Heather, very sorry to hear that. :-(

Hope things weren't/aren't too bad for her.

174657 2003-09-13 05:16:00 chill can make that a bit clearer?? shared ram and onboard graphics are generally the same thing. an odd few motherboards have a proper video onboard but with its own seperate ram.

64meg sounds awfully huge for a video card thats worse than than an 8mb 810 ?:|

Shared RAM is where it uses your systems RAM (In this case we have SD-RAM) as Video RAM. OnBoard Video memory is sorta like an onboard graphics card.. embedded into the motherboard iirc. It has its own Video memory, and doesnt share it with RAM.
We have 256MB RAM in the Family's PC, but only 192 is usable by XP coz the other 64 is reserved for Video RAM.

Shared is generally a fair amount slower than OnBoard, and OnBoard is still not as fast as an AGP card....

I'm sure I've read articles on comparisons.. If you'd like I can see if Google will bring them up?

One more thing.. Shared RAM (In my case, and others...) is able to be changed in the BIOS. We have a min. 4MB Shared Memory, and can choose 8, 16, 32 or 64MB...
I get very poor frame-rates in Half-Life, at 640x480x16bit\
Admittedly, my P300 with a Matrox Millenium 2 card performs around half as well as the Family's Celeron 933 with Shared Video memory... 2MB PCI card vs. 64MB Shared... If it were 4MB, I'd prolly get equalish rates!

Both running XP and have latest drivers and DX!

Sad huh!

174659 2003-09-13 07:18:00 Hi Susan,

A monster of an accident actually. Happened a month ago. She moved to the rehab unit yesterday and we have high hopes that she will be back on her feet taking the photos at her sister's wedding in November. For every parent's nightmare see this (www.details.co.nz).

In the meantime, between visits, work and like, I'm finally getting around to playing with the new (month old) toy - thus the graphics question. Think I've got it sussed (although once someone finished painting his daughter's bedroom wall and watched a few minutes of TV I got kicked off before completely proving it worked).

174660 2003-09-14 05:33:00 Looks pretty bad Heather -- if that is the car your daughter was in she was very lucky to come out of it alive. I hate to think what her injuries are like. :-(

A parent's nightmare? Understatement of the year in my opinion. I hope she has a speedy recovery and no lasting side effects.

174661 2003-09-14 06:13:00 Hi Susan,

Yes, that's her car .

Injuries included cracked pelvis, broken ankle (they screwed the ankle back together), some stitches in her chin and ear and multiple bruises . Now that the total bedrest (pelvis) is over they are getting her mobile again but she will probably have some lasting effects in her foot (they missed a couple of small broken bones) . She was very, very, lucky!

The other driver is a lot worse off due to failing to wear a safety belt . Was critical for 2 weeks and has a lot more broken bones .
