175247 2003-09-15 00:29:00 In my wisdom I thought it was about time I downloaded windows 98 update files for my second computer. I will probably start two threads here. First of all I downloaded and installed IE 6, followed by others. Anyway, in Explorer how do I change my file structure back to no icons? What I want is my various drives (including the networked ones) in the left pane (which is now empty) with my folders and files on the right showing words only (with details). All I get is icons. If I click on View, Details it shows, but as soon as I close it, it reverts to icons when I next open the window. I don't want icons anywhere - just file names with their details.

Help please, and then I will post the next problem.

Thanks

175248 2003-09-15 01:12:00 I am not sure if it will be what you are looking for or not, but if you add
C:\WINDOWS\EXPLORER.EXE /n,/e,C:\
to your Windows Explorer Desktop shortcut in the Properties Target box it may produce what you are wanting. Change the C:\ to whichever drive you require.

175249 2003-09-15 01:15:00 Thanks, Tommy.

I don't think that is what I am wanting. I want two panels showing in Explorer. The left to contain all my drives including the networked ones and the right to contain all folder, files etc - in words (not icons) with their file details. At the moment it is not sticking. All help greatly appreciated.
Thanks

175250 2003-09-15 01:18:00 Further to my suggestion above, you may have to choose Details for your view then close Windows Explorer by clicking on the X button while holding down Shift. The next time Explorer is opened it will hopefully have kept its setting. tommy (2826)
175251 2003-09-15 01:21:00 Sorry, I was obviously thinking you required something else. tommy (2826)
175252 2003-09-15 01:37:00 Another annoying thing is that new windows keep opening (which didn't happen before). I want just one Explorer window. Any suggestions please? Oxie (1318)
175253 2003-09-15 02:35:00 Hi Oxie, try doing this. Open up explorer and then under view click details. This should make the icons appear as you want. Now under Tools/Folder options on the General Tab select the customise settings option. Then click on the settings button and select the Open each icon in same window (or something like that). Ok that and then go to the view tab (beside the general tab). Click on the like current folder to apply all of these settings to all of your folders.
Hope this does the trick :-)

Hi,

There is a tip on this site to get Explorer to open in a double pane when clicking on My Computer.

The suggestion given involves editing the registry.

I thought some readers might be reluctant to do this.

So, for those of you who are, here's another way it can be done without editing the registry.

(BTW - I'm using W 98SE)

1: Click on My Computer.

2: In the menu bar select View/Folder Options/File Types

3: Scroll down the list until you see the entry 'Folder'.

4: Select this entry and then choose 'edit'.

5: In the window that pops up look to the bottom in the field titled 'Actions'.

6: click on 'explore'. Select 'Set Default'.

'explore' will now turn bold.

7: Select 'close' and 'close'.

8: Finally, close the Explorer window down and then click (or double click) on My Computer.

Viola! Double pane Explorer View.

Ciao,

Michael

The above seemed to do the trick. I then followed your advice too and that is fine. Now can you help me to get back the left pane - it is empty showing just a wide grey area. I would like to have my drives and networked drives visible here like I had before. Any ideas?

175255 2003-09-15 03:08:00 Is active desktop enabled? If so try disabling it-
www.xtra.co.nz
or TweakIU for win98.

175256 2003-09-15 03:21:00 Hi,

I have Windows Classic desktop enabled. All I can think of is that I downloaded IE6 with SP1 and installed this today which must have taken over my view settings in Explorer. I would still like to get my left pane back with the drive letters and folders. Any thoughts?
