2003-09-14 08:17:00 | What would be the optimum PC config in terms of CPU, RAM, DVD/CD drivers, Hard Disk, Graphics Cards, Sound cards, software etc. for watching smooth video playback on a computer? I have an AMD Duron 1.1GHZ, 512MB RAM, Nikimi & QF harddisk, Plextor CD-R, Samsung DVD-ROM, Pixelview GeForce4 MX440 and CM sound card.

2003-09-14 09:00:00 | no such thing as optimum. your question really should be "what is the MINIMUM for smooth playback?" your system will be fine. minimum is proberly about a 300mhz cpu tho a good graohics card helps as does decent amount of ram.

2003-09-14 09:19:00 | Thanks tweak'e. I've tried watching videos and DVDs on my computer, but most of them are not running smoothly. I find that after 10-15mins the smoothness decreases and the films are no longer watchable. When I reboot, the film is again OK for the first 10-15 mins. Any special reasons?

2003-09-14 09:29:00 | minimum for some codecs is 600mhz... realistic minimum probably being about 800mhz the player makes a difference too... I find media player classic plays wmv's far more smoothly than wmp6.4 ever can...

2003-09-14 13:00:00 | Minimum? You'll not get by with less than a P75 for watching un-compressed Mpeg files @ 320x240 RAM is 32MB absolute minimum running 95/98 P60 and you'll get the audio in real-time, but the video will lag! DVD Playback can be done on 233Mhz, but that's not at full res. and dont even think about Full-Screen for playback for either of these! DVD's are fine on a P 350Mhz or higher :-) Your PC is way more than enough to do playback of anything! DivX, DVD, Anything else, its far more than sufficient! I'm gonna roll with Tweak'e on this, you've likely got stuff running in the background you dont really need. Update your Virus checker and run a full system Scan. Download Ad-Aware or Spybot Search and Destroy (I'd recommend SS&D). If you're running Win9x/ME then look up WinTasks Lite, free 30 day trial... It'll let you know everything that's currently running (Even stuff that hides from Task Manager!), and let you specify Process Priority, which would help for DVD Playback. If you're running Win2K/XP, then check that no un-neccesary apps are running, then have a look in the Task manager by hitting Ctrl + Shift + Esc and click the Process tab. Let us know how you get on Cheers Chill.

2003-09-14 13:21:00 | If you are watching divx or something similiar you should try enabling post-processing within the player and set it to maximum. Try out FFDShow (cutka.szm.sk) which lets you customise the quality/performance settings for video playback on your pc. | kiki (762) | |
2003-09-15 04:29:00 | I had a P2 400 celeron with a Hollyplus card in it at one time and it was fine for dvd and divx etc so it not the hardware but software in your case , how much HDD space do you have left try zoom player its far better than media player also update your codecs the nimo ones are very good

2003-09-15 04:33:00 | XP is also a problem especially after the Service pack 1 is d/loaded tends to create lots os slow downs as much as 50% in some cases I use 98 plus a XP with no service packs also media player9 is to be avoided its a lot slower than the earlier ones and tends to keep trying to phone home whenever you view something | kiwibeat (304) | |
2003-09-15 06:21:00 | That'd be what it is! That patch for Outlook Express or WinXP SP1...! My employers laptop is exactly the same now come to think of it...!
