175049 2003-09-13 23:52:00 Hi adis25

Go to grc.com and download shoot the messenger, its a very small download 21.5k, run it and it will stop it from running.

175051 2003-09-14 00:23:00 which messenger? MSN messenger (chat program) or messenger service (annoying spam that pops up).

have a look here (www.dougknox.com)

175052 2003-09-14 03:24:00 That shootthemessenger is a waste of time. You can create a batch file and put in it:

net stop messenger

and in another batch file:

net start messenger

It basically does the same thing - stops and starts the messenger service. And if you want to do it the proper way and actually learn something, you disable the service itself via run -> services.msc. Making programs that do such simple things are a waste of time, all it does is make newbies more reliant on programs instead of learning how to do it themselves.

175053 2003-09-14 03:30:00 catch22.....they use programs so they don't learn to use the startard MS tools but if they do it the proper way they often stuff it up and disable a much needed service. tweak'e (174)
175054 2003-09-14 04:01:00 I wanted to uninstall Messenger and used the site to visit. I used the link suggested by Tweak (?). The tiny program by Doug Knox (www.dougknox.com) worked like a dream. No fiddling with the Registry was needed. The reason why I did not want Messenger is that V.6 did not translate to users (on same PC) not having privileges (there, the version 4.7 kept on giving an MS origin warning to upgrade). As I do not use Messenger, I was delighted to get rid of it (I can always re-store it by downloading, probably not in a 1000 years). Auke (4179)
175055 2003-09-14 04:06:00 The link given by Tweak'e leads to a very good recipe for uninstalling Messenger -- no fiddling needed of the Registry. Auke (4179)
175056 2003-09-14 08:25:00 There is a small program called "XP Antispy" on one of the PC World disks.
It gets rid of all the garbage, messages, balloons, nags, etc It also increases the default bandwidth of Windows.
