175002 2003-09-13 11:55:00 Tried refilling my colour cartridge on a HP PSC950 printer. Followed the colour code on the label - prints perfect expect for a complete muck up of the colours. Checked the F1 database and saw a posting on label markings. So having possibly having put the wrong colour in the "right" place (according to the label) I need a new cartridge. No problem as needed a new cartridge anyway - following the database advice will do a paper test on the new cartridge to check against the label. I believe this is probably a deliberate ploy by HP - to teach people like myself a lesson. Anyway I have learnt my lesson and are even more determined to make the exercise of refilling colour cartridges WORK. Am pleased with doing black cartridges - but hey HP cant really mislabel a black cartirdge. WHAT DO YOU THINK Denfinn (1658)

175004 2003-09-13 21:08:00 Have done the black one,but not game enough to do the colour,as my wife uses the printer to make her b/day cards, etc! So let us know how it goes, when you eventually do one! Neil McC (178)
175005 2003-09-13 22:12:00 I have great success refilling my HP cartridges. I used to work in the refilling supplies industry and before they worked out how to refill some of the carts, I had already told them the best process, which they took up a few months later.

I find the black carts can normally be refilled no more than 2 times (3 full cycles) before the ink sprays out making sharp lines and small text look furry.

As for the colour cartridges, these are a gift to refill, but take this advice, when refilling them, never overfill the sponge. The dividers between the sponges are not always watertight and any excess ink floating around can and will seep into the next thirsty sponge and all you'll get is green.

I have the Deskjet 7/8/9 series cartridges. When refilling the colour carts, I use a hyperdermic needle that goes through the plugs in the top, right to the bottom of the cartridge, but I keep it away from the print heads as there is a tiny metal gauze that can be punctured by the sharp needle. I hold the cart above eye level and watch the print heads as I refill them very slowly until I see the first sign of ink seeping out of that colour tank. Then I lift the needle half way out of the sponge and inject around another 3-5ml, again watching the print heads and wiping them clean whenever necessary, doing each colour in turn.

Using this method, I can get up to 7 refills per colour before the cart dies. You need to make sure your hands do not touch the copper contacts or you might damage them.

If you overfill any one of the colours, capillary action from the empty sponge next to it will draw the overflowing ink from the overfilled sponge up through the print head and the colours will mix and your cartridge will be ruined.

I have in the past when financially strapped been able to flush a colour cartridge with copious quantities of water, then followed by a weak mix of household bleach, the water again then the inks and this worked, but it's a lot of hassle as all 3 colours have to be flushed simultaneously under pressure and drained using a vacuum pump.

And as a last caution, if you're using the Calidad refills, I have found their instructions to be detrimental to some cartridges and not very professional.

Have fun.

175006 2003-09-13 22:29:00 Thats strange I have a HP 520 Deskjet and use Calidad cartridges and refills. They print better than the original HP cartridge.
No problems filling, them just put foam with double sided tape on the right hole and squirt the ink in.
So its $14 to fill up a big cartridge that lasts for ever. The replacment Calidad cartridge costs half the price of the HP one and prints better.

Hello Mike. Good info. I tried simmer in water for a few mins on an HP black. Did not help much. Found advice to use blue Window cleaner on a couple of newsgroups. Did not help much. Cartridge refiller at Porirua said use Windowcleaner in hot water jacket. Worked fine.

175008 2003-09-15 10:24:00 Personally I would recommend a Cannon because unlike HP the print head is not in the cartridge and from what I have heard you can get at least 6 refills per printhead so it works out a great deal cheaper in the long run. mikebartnz (21)
175009 2003-09-15 10:53:00 Where do you get Calidad Ted? Thomas (1820)

Now you have me confused.

Are you saying that a separate printhead is better?
Epson certainly use separate print heads, possibly some Canon models may.

If you truly (only) get 6 refills before replacing the print head, then thats a rather expensive way to go, have you priced printheads?
Its usually cheaper to replace the printer than a printhead.

With HP, if the refill fails, a new cartridge returns everything to normal
