175541 2003-09-15 20:15:00 Bloody OE. I am trying to export my emails to a PST file as a backup. When I select the export function (File-Export_Messages), I get the following error...

"The Export could not be performed. An error occurred while initializing MAPI."

In trolling MSKB I see this article (support.microsoft.com). I cant see an OE6 version of this but it appears I need to remove OE as the default mail client.

Heres the trouble though, under Tools-Options-General tab the 'Make Deafult' button is greyed out next to 'This application is the default mail handler'.

So how are you to remove OE as the default mail handler when there is no option? Pretty piss poor design.

I dont particularly want to uninstall/reinstall and risk losing my emails. Also I dont have any other email apps installed that would conflict.

Any suggestions?

I don't believe you can export messages from Outlook Express to Outlook (to an Outlook . PST file) unless you also have Outlook or windows messaging installed on your computer .
The files and libraries required to do the export are not included with Outlook Express .

Either install one of those programs, backup or do a manual export .
There is a Microsoft article to help you backup/export files under Outlook Express: Here ( . microsoft . com/?kbid=270670" target="_blank">support . microsoft . com)

(oh and don't ask why the option is there to export to a PST when you don't have support, MS assumes we all have thousands of dollars to invest in multiple mail software and hardware to run it all on (especially MS s/w))

Cheers, Babe .

175543 2003-09-16 01:21:00 Thanks muchly. Trouble is I cant export to any file - just thought PST would be the file type but never got that far :-)

Will try the manual backup and hope this is able to be imported (or over-rides existing msgs if its just file replacements). Normally cant be arsed to backup but thought it was about time, only to strike problems. Must be a moral in this story somewhere.

Thanks again.
