175517 2003-09-15 11:23:00 I noticed that the icon for my AOpen CD writer had changed to an exclamation mark. I tried opening the Nero Burning Rom software and got the following message. The Win-ASPI file '?.?' can't be found, therefore you can currently select only image recorders.
This missing file is a part of the Windows 95/98/ME files. Please fix this problem and then restart Nero.
[Error 12: Init failed!]
I notice that sometimes the in use light on the front of the writer is always on, and another time when I start the computer it may stay off. There is no CD in the tray, and the tray will not open when pushing the button, or using a paper clip through the emergency release hole.
I am using ME. Any ideas on how to fix this problem? I tried using Go Back to before I noticed the problem, but it still persists.
Coinciding with this I tried to use my encarta CD in the normal CD ROM drive and got a message saying that my IE security was set to Custom and to change it to medium (it was on medium and has always worked before). Another message then came up. File Error: Encarta Interactive World Atlas is unable to continue running on your computer. Your network based installation is unavailable at this time.
What does it all mean, and how do I fix it?
Thanks, Graham.

175518 2003-09-15 11:43:00 By what you have said I would say you have a hardware problem with the CD drive. Take the cover off the computer and check all the connections to the drive and the motherboard first. If you're lucky it may just be a bad connection to one of the pins in the big wide IDE cable. But I suspect that the drive might be history. I had an old CDROM drive that used to play up like that, and it used to infuriate me by continually opening and closing the CD tray rapidly. BTW, you don't try opening the tray with a pin through the emergency release hole when the PC is turned on. It should work OK when the power is off though. Rod J (451)
175519 2003-09-15 21:08:00 Thanks Rod. I haven't had a look and fiddle inside yet, but will do. On further checking when I open 'my computer', or the device manager, I cannot see either the CD ROM or CD R drives listed. I think when I installed the writer that it was set to slave and the CD ROM was master. I guess if I don't find any loose connections I could disconnect the CD ROM drive and set the writer to master and see if it works?
I did a search on Google for the error message and there were a few posts with sites to download ASPI files, but it started getting all a bit scary! One person with the same messages as me had tried downloading updated files and had no luck and ended up finding a loose connection inside as you have suggested, which fixed the problem. Aren't error messages great!

175520 2003-09-15 21:24:00 Check in Device Manager and make sure there are no errors on the Primary or Secondary IDE channels. If there is then that will stop the CD-ROM & CD-R drives from showing up. CYaBro (73)
175521 2003-09-16 01:53:00 Yes, you could try eliminating the CDROM drive from the problem by disconnecting it. It could be either drive is causing the problem and it could possibly disable both drives. Also I would have the CD Writer as Master in any case because it will then receive the most resource priority which is a good thing when writing CD's and to avoid making 'coasters'.

I don't know how old your CD writer is but they are certainly a lot cheaper than a couple of years ago (and maybe they aren't built to last so long either ;)). I paid nearly $300 for mine and I see the latest model is under $100! They aren't much more expensive than ordinary CDROM drives now.

175522 2003-09-16 03:00:00 Try reinstalling Nero should do the trick. If not download the ASPI drivers from adaptec. -=JM=- (16)
175523 2003-09-16 12:46:00 Many thanks for the advice everyone. It turned out that a reinstall of Nero was what was needed. Although I found that when I removed the writer drive from the computer, the CD ROM drive was back to being okay. At least the inside of the case got a much needed clean! Grimy (3041)
