175280 2003-09-15 02:16:00 Yeah hi,
My flatmates computer won't boot into windows. It goes through the initial boot sequence but freezes right before the log in window appears. This happens when trying to boot into safe mode as well as trying system restore. I did inadvertently choose the wrong drivers for his display adapter which is why i suspect it won't boot ;-\... Anyone one got any suggestions??
Thanks in advanced.

175281 2003-09-15 02:35:00 If you boot of the WinXP CD as if you were about to install it, begin the process and it will ask you if you wish to Repair the "Found XP Installation" or do a clean install. Tell it you wish to repair it :-)

Let us know how you get on

Cheers

175282 2003-09-15 03:59:00 boot in from a floppy startup disk a 98 or ME one will do get into safe mode and uninstall the graphics drivers kiwibeat (304)
175283 2003-09-15 06:28:00 Ahh we tryed to boot from the CD and a 98 boot disk, which it nearly loaded, but then says somethings about not being shutdown properly and then gives you the choice of different boot modes but they all end up freezing.......have sort of hit a brick wall...thanks guys. ron_m (4565)
175284 2003-09-15 06:55:00 Have you tried repairing from the console (text/command prompt) when you boot to the XP CD. it could be the Master Boot Record rather than the drivers as such, in which case you choose Fix MBR. I think you can prevent the video drivers from loading with the same method, Repair or troubleshoot.

PS. I'm assuming its similar to win2K

175285 2003-09-17 01:54:00 Hey Murray, I actually don't get that boot option, only safe mode , system restore etc.???? ron_m (4565)
175286 2003-09-17 02:37:00 Change the settings in the BIOS to boot from the cdrom / floppy before the hard drive. kiki (762)
175287 2003-09-18 01:28:00 think we may have found the problem. the xp disc he has is actually the one that came with his lap top which is an hp. is it computer specific for hp only comps or can the boot files be accessed from any computer? ron_m (4565)

175289 2003-09-18 01:39:00 Is it an HP rescue disk? If it is it won't work on another machine other than that which it shipped with (although there has been some dispute of this in past threads, do a search of PF1 for rescue disc, copy protection or similar was about 2 months back). What CD did he load his OS from, use that and as above if it isn't booting change your boot sequence in the BIOS.
