175276 2003-09-15 02:02:00 I've got a new computer running Outlook express WinXP, how can I transfer my addressbook, messages etc off my old computer (OE/Win2000), what files do I need to copy? jeep (1673)
175277 2003-09-15 02:33:00 The easiest way to do your Address book is:
Start
-Find
You want to tell XP to search ALL files and folder, including hidden ones.
Search for *.wab

Next, there is a folder called Outlook Express, find it in C:\Documents and Settings\Application Data\Identities\{Identity number here}\Microsoft\

Back that up, as it contains your emails :-)

Cheers

175278 2003-09-15 02:46:00 Instead of transferring the files you copy them and import into your new system, though if you really want to, you can transfer them .

In most Win2K standard setups, the Outlook Express Store can be found in C:\Documents and settings\your user name\Application Data\Identities\{a long string of characters} and the files will all have the extension . dbx Copy the entire folder .

Your old Address book should be in C:\Documents and settings\your user name\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book\name . wab and name . wa~ You will need to copy both files .

Copy the entire contents of the folder to a removeable disk and then to a temporary location on your new HDD .

Now open OE and choose File > Import > Messages, select Outlook Express (version number) then tell the system where the files are located in your temporary folder and it should import them all for you though sometimes if there is a version difference, nothing will be imported .

In this instance, you can simply either copy the folders from your old store over the top of the new store, which will be in a similar location, or make a new location and move the store to the new location using the Tools > Options > Maintenencae Tab and clicking the Store Folder Button, then the change button, browse to the new location select it and pressing the OK button a few times . You will have to restart Outlook for the changes to take effect .

I suggest you compact your folders in the old location before you copy them to a removeable disk first to reduce the physical size of the files you have to copy . Use OE's File > Folder > Compact all folders sub menu in your old system .

It's always best to import your old contacts, again through the File > Import > Address Book (WAB) sub menu . The rest should be self explanatory .
