175794 2003-09-16 10:57:00 I am getting adverts popping up in plague proportions....from weight control - GAIN, Work from Home, Memory Managers...etc , etc
I have Ad Aware starting when I boot up but this is not stopping them.
What is the most effective way of stopping these #&@%$ 's. ??

175797 2003-09-16 11:08:00 Try a firewall like Agnitums Outpost (www.agnitum.com) (free version) which blocks popups, or try using Mozilla Firebird (www.mozilla.org) internet browser. Jen C (20)
175798 2003-09-16 11:14:00 if they come only when you go to a site then thats just plain normall. the only way to cut that down is to use some form of adblocking eg different browser, host file, or one of the many adblocking apps out there.

if you are getting ads popup when you don't have a web page open then you most likly have some adware/spyware installed.

175799 2003-09-16 11:19:00 Ive said it before, ill say it againTHE PROXIMITRON,Greatest piece of software ever made.

And its free.

And run spybot,Bet youve got loads on your system that ad-awere is missing,Especially as you mention GAIN,i bet both that and gator are installed on your puter.

175800 2003-09-16 12:19:00 I am usin Opera 7.11 at the moment & don't get any pop ups.
The best thing is that it has a setting "allow pop ups by invitation only" which means that it does not stop pop ups as in Internet banking etc.

175801 2003-09-16 12:21:00 zone alarm firewall seems to stop popups. makara (4567)
175802 2003-09-16 19:44:00 Defend in depth is always a good approach. Use ad-aware & SpyBot together (as recomm by PCW mag Sept 2003). I also have a firewall plus the Google Toolbar also stops pop-ups - quite effectively I might add. parry (27)
175803 2003-09-16 22:03:00 Download the new Google toolbar as this has a popup blocker in it now! and it works great! CYaBro (73)
