176022 2003-09-17 11:37:00 I have an XP Home PC running Norton Antivirus 2002 with Outlook Express mail client happily for almost 2 years. Suddenly NAV pops up a dialogue saying it was unable to start Email Protection. All the listed fixes I can find on the Norton Website tell me to start Norton Antivirus and start changing some switches. When I do this, a window flashes on the screen and immediately disappears. Nothing is there to change. I seem to be in a bit of catch-22. NAVAPSVC.exe is loaded.

Any ideas?

176023 2003-09-17 23:18:00 i would uninstall nortons, clean out any left overs and then reinstall and update. nortons always seems to break every so often.

also i would scan for spyware as well.

176024 2003-09-18 07:47:00 It may pay to go the 'Security Check' section of Symantec's website and download a vrus checker utility they have to check whether or not you've been infected with a variant of the W32 worm -- this may explain why NAV is not working correctly.
Can't give you the exact URL offhand as in LInux and only have it bookmarked under Windows!
If you can't find it easily post back and I'll advise of the URL when I boot back into Windows soon.

176025 2003-09-18 09:55:00 Thanks - it seems my Nortons is not what it seems - the PC came complete with a Symantec Norton CD - but it appears not to be the whole application, just a Boot CD. So if I uninstall NAV it looks as though I will have nothing to put back. Will have to have words with the vendor - relatively reputable I thought (until now)!!

I scan with Adaware and Spybot regularly - nothing abnormal there. And I also scanned with Norton's test download off the web which found nothing, - - - - all very puzzling.

176026 2003-09-18 10:06:00 the symantec cd's are normally bootable. tweak'e (174)
176027 2003-09-18 11:33:00 You are correct - the CD doesn't show any files under explorer, but is bootable.

Seems to emulate an A: drive - but it only has files for an emergency scan, but doesn't find anything - it only scans memory and the boot sector I think. My C: drive seems to be invisible (no such disk). Not much use if there is a contaminated c: drive. !@#$%^&*!!!!!!

Can't see anyway to install NAV again off this CD should I be so bold as to uninstall the current faulty version.

176028 2003-09-19 15:58:00 I am not sure here if it will help have you tried disabling hide system files etc?

Normally cds wouldnt i think have this set but perhaps its unusual cd.

Also try testing the cd in another machine it may be the CDROM/whatever drive is having problems reading it correctly.
