Lord of the Rings special effects shop Weta Digital has taken delivery of the last of 1174 powerful blade servers supplied by IBM to produce the effects for the final instalment of the trilogy.

The last six racks containing 504 blade servers – each of which contain two 2.8 gigahertz Xeon Intel processors and 6 gigabytes of memory – are being housed in Telecom's Featherston St site as Weta Digital has run out of space in its Miramar headquarters.

Weta Digital's graphic artists working on The Return of the King will access the additional processing power via fibre optic lines which run between the two sites.

Telecom is understood to have installed extra air conditioning units in its Featherston St building to keep the new processors cool.

The arrival of the latest blade servers means Weta Digital is now the largest Intel-based high-performance computing centre in the world, by Intel's estimation, with 3200 processors in total working on the special effects for the trilogy.

The 1174 IBM blades, worth about $5 million, belong to New Line Cinema but will become the property of Weta Digital once The Return of the King is completed.

Dell Computer is meanwhile understood to have acquired the rights to become the only computer company which can be associated with Lord of the Rings from the film's maker, New Line Cinema, which tightly controls all publicity relating to the film. Dell is understood to have supplied Weta with computers which are used for administration.
