176167 2003-09-18 05:26:00 My Windows XP Home has recently been freezing, (but not every time) at the "Welcome" screen when I start the pc.

I get no action when I use the keyboard so I have to hold the power button in to close down, then try opening again from scratch.

Can anyone please suggest what may be wrong and how I can overcome this situation?

Peter.

176168 2003-09-18 10:24:00 This sounds similar to a problem my dad is having with his Win XP machine... however I've determined that it's not XP that's freezing (in his case) but rather that his mouse and keyboard aren't properly activated.

Sorry I can't help, but it might be another angle to look at.

Mike.

176170 2003-09-19 16:02:00 what happened before it stopped?

1. Unplug all unneccsary devices and keep connections to a minum [check they are firmly in place].

2. I would suggest try pushing f8 on loading before the windows logo and try entering safe mode

3. see if you can get into that and see if there is anything loading on startup that is causing a problem

4. possible insert the install cd and choose when loading the cd install > repair [yes its unusual repair is under install]

5. depends on many things but perhaps considering backing up the files you want and reinstalling. Option 6 may have some likelyhood of failing whereas this may be safer

176171 2003-09-19 23:59:00 Here's some thoughts. Presumably you were able to boot OK. So the question is , 'What has altered ?'
Did you load some software before it started to play up ?
It boots some times so it shouldn't really be the software, i.e. the OS.
Hardware ?
What happens if you walk away and have a cup of tea (or stiff whiskey!). Has it booted then ?
XP can can an awful long time to boot in some machines (there is a good tweak in the latest Atomic magazine for this).
Try running BootVis from Microsoft. It is a boot logger and from memory you can read the log file even after a failed boot, i.e. up to where it froze.
When you ay the keyboard doesn't work, will the numlock light turn on or off ? Not that that means that much as there is a stage when it won't respond.

Best of luck.
