176135 2003-09-18 00:51:00 The usual complaint, Runing XP pro with 2 PC's networked via 10/100 switch with cable lengths 20m and the other 10m (both @ least 1.2ghz with 512DDR), we network game without problem BF1942. But if I expore my way to his PC it seems to takes about 2 minutes for it to show the files (click somewhere else says not responding but recovers eventually to show folder), if I paste it transfers fast. We have specified IP # 192.168.0.1 and .2
I have read so much on network stuff, but still no idea.

Does anyone know what the problem could possibly be? I was thinking the actual cables, but games and transfers run @ 100mb/s?

176136 2003-09-18 01:42:00 Have you mapped the drives?

176137 2003-09-18 02:01:00 not sure but murray might might be on the right track there cause everytime windows networking goes to find that computer it has to translate it again and try to find it. But if you map the drive then it will remeber where it is, just like what your games are doing Budda (2736)
176138 2003-09-18 05:46:00 Yep that sure helped, cheers, so it is expected to be slow if just browsing network? Because it takes a few minutes just to view the workgroup but the mapped drives are almost instantaneous once your logged on.

Thanks for your help it sure will hurry the file transfer along rather than just burn it to CD!

176139 2003-09-18 05:59:00 When it "browses" the MS Neighbourhood it is looking for all sorts of things which might be there in a bigger network than yours. And it will wait until it timesout when some things aren't there. :D

The mapping tells it where to look.

I assume it's whatever machine wins the election that get's this noble deed?
Have you got any firewalls running which currently block MS Services to your local network?

176141 2003-09-21 09:47:00 Make sure simple file sharing is ticked on BOTH

(This will save u adding a "guest" on each of the PC's).

Windows explorer/Tools/Folder options/view down the bottom.

If you use a firewall on both, "add" 192.168.0.1 to the networked
one and vice versa. And also the workgroup names SHOULD be the same on BOTH.

Also on BOTH LAN icons, go to properties/TCP/IP/properties and select use the following IP (not automatically give it one). As XP will generate random IP's everytime u reboot/boot! 192.168.0.1 on the main
192.168.0.2 on the networked one. DONT use the network wizard. It sux! And will, or can make things longer/worse! Also on the networked one under use the following DNS server (the first one) type in 192.168.0.1, if u want the networked PCto get on the net!
