176060 2003-09-17 22:50:00 i made a mistake of purchasing a dynalink internal modem a couple of years ago.
Now i want to replace it with something that is NOT a crappy winmodem.
anyone got any ideas?

i saw a US robotics modem and wonder if they are any good?

176061 2003-09-17 22:58:00 US robotics make some good modem chips but then again so do dynalink generally, if you want a good one make sure its a hardware modem rather than software, as in it has its own processor not using your main processor.

You could also try C Net ones.

176062 2003-09-17 23:07:00 hmm i'm really considering choosing an external serial modem over an internal one should i or should i not? bob_doe_nz (92)
176063 2003-09-17 23:09:00 An external modem is far better these days, as they are real hardware modems. The 3Com/US Robotics external modems are as good as they come. Terry Porritt (14)
176064 2003-09-17 23:12:00 Just don't get a USB modem, as these are usually Winmodems in drag.

Dynalink and D-Link external Serial RS232 modems are both OK.

176065 2003-09-17 23:34:00 If you want an internal hardware modem you will need an available ISA slot. PCI modems are win/software or controllerless modems.

Serial is your best bet but be prepared to pay for a good one, USR, Dynalink, Dlink.
