176740 2003-09-21 06:11:00 Hi all

[WinXP Home + SP1]

My Networked Shared Documents (SharedDocs) folder has just started to crash Windows Explorer the majority of the time when I am accessing documents within it. Explorer doesn't crash (or so far hasn't) when browsing any other directory - just the SharedDocs.

Of course this co-incides with me uninstalling some programs today - namely Eudora and jv16 (trial had expired). I also ran Norton SystemWorks One Button Checkup after uninstalling the programs which also tidied up a few stray files.

I have used System Restore to roll the system back one day, which did not help. I have also undone all the repairs performed by One Button Checkup, and reinstalled and then uninstalled Eudora again. Explorer still crashes.

The Application event viewer has this log:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The application, C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe, generated an application error The error occurred on 09/21/2003 @ 14:59:44.546 The exception generated was c0000005 at address 7749745F (SHELL32!SHLoadNonloadedIconOverlayIdentifiers)

For more information, see Help and Support Center at go.microsoft.com
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trying to decipher that error suggests that my Icon Shell files for that folder are having *issues* - would that be correct?

Is there something I could try to correct this? Failing a fix, I have a recent Ghost Image which I can restore from but it would be easier for me to fix it without having to resort to this.

Thanks muchly

Jen :)

176741 2003-09-21 07:31:00 Hi Jen. Have u scanned for viruses/trojans/worms? And spyware. One or the other can crash different parts of XP. And the programs u uninstalled did u delete the folders as well? It may also be something that is still in the registry or in msconfig (type in from start/run). Do any errors appear at all, after u boot Windows? Umm, I take it you're on a network? If so, how many PC's are networked to yours? Spacemannz (808)
176742 2003-09-21 07:55:00 The XP machine is squeaky clean, no viruses/trojans or spyware present. I did manually delete the uninstalled program folders under C:\Program Files because they usually get left behind after the uninstalling process - however they are not part of the Shared Documents folder.

The machine is only networked to one other which runs Linux Red Hat 9. I can view and browse the ShareDocs folder from the Red Hat machine with no problems.

There were no error message except for the Explorer crashing which sometimes gives me the "I'm sorry for the inconvience but ..." crash message, other times Explorer just vanishes. XP handles all this in its stride and carries on normally despite Explorer losing the plot quietly. I have tried rebooting the machine but nothing changes.

What is interesting is that in the My Network Places > SharedDocs folder I can open that folder, but all subfolders will cause Explorer to crash when opened. Also if I navigate to C:\ Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents, I can open any of the same subfolders without Explorer crashing.

Looks to be this problem is specific to the My Network Places > SharedDocs folder contents.

176743 2003-09-21 08:07:00 Can you make a new folder, then copy the stuff into that, then share it?

Give TweakUI a go and see if repairing the icon cache does anything.

Your profile might be corrupt or something, so you could try making a new one as a last resort.

176744 2003-09-21 09:09:00 Make a new folder and share it and untick the shared documents folder.
So, its not shared anymore. It isnt normally shared as default.

Then try and see if it works. And make sure simple file sharing is ticked

YOU can make any folder and share it. It DOESNT have to be the shared document folder. Just make sure you dont share the whole hard drive!

Which one is the main PC? XP or Linux? And can BOTH get on the net? Or are you ONLY sharing files? Not the net?

Only that one folder has a problem with Windows Explorer, and I only share files and the printer. Each has its own internet connection via an external ADSL modem/router.

I know you can share any folder with the appropriate change to Sharing and Security settings, but since the previously happy folder is the default shared folder with XP which is accessable via My Computer as well as the quick links in the left pane in Explorer I was hoping to be able to restore its functionality. The other shared folders (not the default ones) that I have previously created all work fine still.

I have made a temporary new folder but I think I will use Ghost to restore my system from the last image unless anyone else has further suggestions.

Cheers

Jen

176746 2003-09-21 11:17:00 OK update:

Just restored XP from the last Ghost image I had (2 weeks old) and guess what! That problem with the shared folder crashing Windows Explorer still occurs - crikey! Don't you just love computers :D

I have shut down the Linux box in case it was samba causing the problem from the shared folder, but this made no difference. Fresh out of ideas now.

176748 2003-09-21 11:47:00 Um, just a thought, Jen. If you searched for and found a file called "winppr32.* in your windows directory, then you would need to take steps to clean out the Sobig F virus from your system.

Hope it's not that, though. ;)

176749 2003-09-21 11:54:00 Thanks eef2

But my system was and still is squeaky clean from any currently known virus (latest defs and full daily scans).
