176918 2003-09-24 11:25:00 The service will be progressively launched through the Auckland metropolitan area, where a successful trial was run last year. Initial coverage (west to east) will be from Mt Albert to St Heliers and (north to south) from Takapuna to Penrose.

Mr Smith said that the company would be extending its coverage on a careful step-by-step basis that ensured service standards were maintained at the highest levels. It is expected that 70% of Auckland will be covered by Christmas.

176919 2003-09-24 11:51:00 I doubt very much if its ever gonna be available outside Auckland. Holy Cow (4475)

176921 2003-09-29 07:00:00 Got it a few months back when they were selling off their trial modems. It's not too bad but they say it isn't effected by weather. I would dispute that, when it rains hard (is it does in Auckland), or blows etc my connection fluctuates from good to no connection so you are constantly connected and disconnected.

I have JS Starter as well and prefer that connection, just plug in the Ethernet cable and go, no hassles.

They've been talking up network rollout for months as well and haven't got anywhere. They keep telling me a new site will be installed near my place in the next month, but it never happens.

I'm sceptical at this stage as to how far they will go, they have a good PR story and the technology is OK, but really how many people want portability of service - I would say not enough to make this a viable data service. I guess we should keep an eye out for voice.

Its all interesting

176924 2003-09-29 23:11:00 They supposedly do 40% of Auckland already, with 70% planned by December...

Where's this 40% though? From the looks of it here, its not even close to 40!

176925 2003-09-30 09:14:00 What is this joining fee? Their website quotes only $399 for the modem, and then the monthly charge.
My check said that Papatoetoe would get service next February.

176926 2003-09-30 23:40:00 I signed up when it launched two weeks ago, the modem was expensive ($399+GST) but it's worth it for the extra speed and unlimited downloads. Speed is about 200 - 240k off a website, and music files off Kazza are about 260k...

There are no extra costs other than the modem, it plugs into my laptop via USB and lasts about 3hrs before it needs recharging.

You can also get an ethernet connector for it, so you can plug it into your WAP/ROUTER etc.. to share the connection over a network.
