176750 2003-09-22 06:50:00 Whats the CD? OEM , full, upgrade? And is the computer one you brought as a system. I find its better to make one up instead of buying a PC. PC's you buy, break down too often! And it's harder to fix.

It's heaps easier to reinstall XP (doing a clean install) if u have any probs like now. It may sound hard to do, BUT it's a piece of cake putting 1 together, and best of all, everything you chuck in one you make will work!

This is NOT always the case, with systems you buy. Not everything is compatible. Especially, with Compaq, HP, and the usually brands of systems people can buy. And some of these companies make it, so their hardware is the only thing that'll work on it! And rejects / plays up with everything else.

176751 2003-09-22 07:13:00 Hi again Spacemannz

This computer is one I built myself and I purchased an OEM Full Version of XP Home to put on it - so I am quite familiar with its body and soul :) . You are right - it is better to build your own PC (if you have the skills and determination) as you get exactly what you want for your needs and the components you have chosen specifically .

Using Nortons Ghost to dump a previously working image (had no problems with Explorer then) onto that hard drive wiped out anything weird that XP has just started doing, so doing a full reinstall (thanks for that suggestion Susan :p) is not necessary .

My other option is to go back to an even earlier image (I make new ones every month and keep the last 4 months worth) and seeing whether that helps . The image I restored from was 2 weeks old and I am pretty sure that browsing the subfolders of the Shared Documents folder didn't cause any problems back then . I normally access that folder from the Linux machine or save files into the main folder and not the subfolders . Who knows .

I might just live with this for the time being as when SP2 comes out for XP I intend to do a complete reformat and reinstall then . Complete spring cleaning always chirps a computer up :D

Cheers
Jen

176752 2003-09-22 08:32:00 ooooo OK. Thats good! yer I've made up 4 PC's. 1 166, 1 P4 2.4 533, this P4 400 mhz 1.5, and 1 P4 which is soon to be another 2.4 800 mhz...

Ah ok so u got it when u got some part for the puter. The CD since its OEM. Yer I love making them up in my spare time. A good way to learn about whats what in a PC! And at least (hopefully)! if it dies u / I can fix it! Saves a lot of money , well taking to a shop to get it fixed.

Did u watch that program last night on 3? at 7? Cant remember the name now lol. Man those PC repair guys were hopeless lol. couldnt fix it or find the prob which was a faulty reset. LOL I'll make sure I dont get one of them, if I cant figure a prob out.
