177225 2003-09-23 02:12:00 I want a flow diagram type program, price is no object as long as it does what I need.

What I currently do, is jot down lots of notes, functions, codes in a notebook to help me when building programs but I've found that I don't always put my notes in the right order or I need to link back to the function and it's hard for me to refer back to what I'm doing if it's all in a notebook or where I've gotten up to and what I've actually completed and not completed.

I find a flow chart is similar to how describing a program works, so I may also use it to help me explain what my programs do, will help other developers understand and help aid in my projects.

Any ideas on a good flow chart program?

177226 2003-09-23 02:25:00 There is a port of Dia (http://dia-installer.sourceforge.net/) to Win32. Haven't tried it myself under Windows, but it works great under Linux.

Other than that, I guess you could look at Visio.

177227 2003-09-23 02:34:00 Thanks Segfault will check out Dia, may just be what I'm looking for.

I'll look at Visio, as I've heard good things about it, although that was from a tutor a long time ago, don't think he heard of the great things of Linux then.

177228 2003-09-26 20:35:00 Just spotted your query about flow charts. I'm a bit late but here goes. I have used flow charts for 50 years or so (Yes I am retired) and during that time have used some specialist computer programs. I found they caused more problems than they solved. For the last 12 years or so any flow charts I have used have been done by me in DCCHOICE or its successor DCWIN. Use DCWIN - its unbelievable. As it is a CAD program and no longer supported there are minor problems - it was originally written for win3.1 so file names are the old 8.3 format only.
DCWIN does mean that the layout is precisely what YOU want. Contact TRIUS for a free download - contact me it you need any more help.

177229 2003-09-26 21:43:00 Kame, Had a search of Google and came up with this programme as a possibilty for you. It is available as a free download on a 30 day trial. It certainly looks interesting.

177230 2003-09-26 23:15:00 I used Microsoft Visio all thru Uni and always found it easy to get on with. pompeymike (4601)
177231 2003-09-27 04:43:00 I've seen dia recommended for use to make a flow chart to keep a manager happy. The guy hinted that it didn;t matter if it was always the same flowchart you gave to the boss; he wouldn't kniow the difference. :D

Flow charts used to be recommended as part of programme design/documentation. I never found them any use. Even more useless than other people's comments, like a = a + 1 ; ADD 1 TO A :_|

177233 2003-09-27 08:39:00 Completely agree with you Graham. A small bit of planning for sure is bound to help but not doing the whole thing in a flow chart or a full UML model. -=JM=- (16)

Classic! Was every variable given such descriptive text? Must of taken them hours to do that ... and achieve sfa :-D

I used to do lots of process mapping and system diagrams and never found Visio to be a standout app to me, but is the most common one that businesses seem to use. Im not a programmer but Graham L sounds as though he may be. So what do you do when designing Graham?
