177084 2003-09-22 10:03:00 Hi all
I have a little issue that someone may be able to help me with.
I have tried to load SP1 from PC Worlds CD and have got an "Invalid Product Key" error.
I tried to load SP1 from a MS site and got the same error but had an error message 326904 that I followed up on the MS Knowledge base that lead me to article 328874.
This told me that I had to change product key from within the registry. I did this and then tried to load SP1 again. It failed with the same error.
Being a patient person and reasonable prepared to spend some time in a phone queue, I rang MS. They were very helpful and explained that as some manufactures (Compaq) in my case used a generic product key on their PCs and as this # has been released on the Net, SP1 has some line of code that identifies my product code as invalid. Handy that.
The fix is supposed to solve my problems but has not.
MS are meant to be looking into it for me but that was 3 days ago and there is no resolve as yet.
Are there and super intelligent F1ers out there that may have a resolve.
Don't tell me Linux as that is like telling a motorist who has a flat tyre that he needs to buy a new car.
Cheers

177085 2003-09-22 10:10:00 could be that someone has loaded an illegal copy of windows on your pc. if it is legal then its up to MS to provide a new copy. tweak'e (174)
177086 2003-09-22 11:59:00 Ok is this the Corporate version of XP Pro, or the retail version of XP Pro??? kiki (762)
177087 2003-09-23 03:07:00 Guys
I have an 8 month old Compaq PC pre installed with XPPro, complete with
a valid product key sticker on case of PC.
Still haven't heard back from MS
I feel another long wait on the phone is coming.

177088 2003-09-27 09:50:00 Well there no such thing as a corp version. Its a volume licenced version

Where you can install it on more than 1 pc and w/o activation. There was or may still be a way of doing this to normal versions of XP. It doesnt matter whether u have HOME or PRO. Certain files, will change BOTH to a volume licenced version. All u need is 1 file and a burner. And voila You have a version of XP, u can install on unlimted PC's! Installing SP1, also isnt a prob as there is a workaround for this. So it works, and so do further updates for XP.

177089 2003-09-27 10:22:00 Ms only blocked 2 product keys, there is zero chance that your install is using that key unless you have the wared version of xp.

What whover on the phone told you was complete bollucks.

177091 2003-09-28 00:54:00 Take it back to where you brought it from and ask them to fix it under warrenty. If MS says they used a worng key that is already only the net then the seller should fix it by getting another key for you. Big John (551)
177092 2003-09-28 03:17:00 Hey Metla
Yes I would be interested in your fix.
At this stage I had intentended to install a new hard drive as master, set my original drive as slave, load the recovery disk to the new drive and then copy the data from my old drive and hopefully correct all my problems

I tried to send to your hotmail box and hotmail tells me that it is invalid.
If you have a resolve, try me at bertie1955@h0tmale.com.
Ive scramled the last part of the adress so nasties out there cant capture the adress for bulk mailing.
Im sure you can figure it out.

177093 2003-09-28 03:40:00 Well yes, your email address might not be picked up correctly by a bot crawling the internet for email addresses, but don't forget the possibility that spammers may also manually harvest some email addresses by perusing forums and what-not. agent (30)
