177569 2003-09-24 06:59:00 My new comp has come with XP installed but no copy on CD. There is a partition on the hard drive called PRESARIO RP [D:]. Will it be ok to format D: drive "I have used the compaq recovery cd creator {6 cd's}" or is it a MUST HAVE. I would like to have a go with linux on D:. Piet (1988)
177570 2003-09-24 07:05:00 The recovery cd should contain your copy of XP although you won't be able to tell by looking at it. I am not sure if formating the d: would be a good idea or not as it stores things there that are needed should you use the recovery cd to restore your OS, however it is only a small partition anyway so I'd just leave it and create a new partition from your C: if you have the space and call it E: maybe. 177572 2003-09-24 09:26:00 Your home created recovery CDs should indeed restore your system to the point that you created them.

It will not allow you to perform a repair or carry out other mainenance such as System File Check however, and if you format the D: partition it will probably impact on any warranty relating to the software as well.

Hard drives are so cheap now, I would recommend fitting a second one.

177573 2003-09-24 10:57:00 The partition in D drive is actually your copy of XP and includes all drivers and software that came with your computer when you first brought it. You will probably find the partition is locked and you will ( usually ) be unable to format it. I suggest keep it there as you never know when it might come in handy and the space it actually uses will not be great. As suggested look at another Hard Drive instead as they are cheap nowdays and very easy to install. dipstick01 (445)
177574 2003-09-24 12:30:00 Ive just formatted a Compaq Presario 7000 this morning to tell the truth.

From my readings, I believe that the D: Drive is a "User-backup" of your data, and is not essential if you have working restore CD's.

It may however pay to call the Compaq support line and ask them, better safe than sorry after all.

If its a new PC, Im guessing the HDD is 40 Gigs +, so why not invest in a copy of Partition Magic? You'll thank yourself later.. ;-)

Cheers

177578 2003-09-25 09:19:00 its all part of learning about computers jjjj. It has both its advantages and disadvantages and one persons opinion is not always the right one so allow for others and everyone will be happy. dipstick01 (445)
