177382 2003-09-23 10:46:00 I have just received this from a reliable(?) source ~

"Want to shut down down Windows XP in a flash? It's easy. Create this desktop shortcut and call it "Quick Shutdown" or whatever you want.

Right click your desktop (where there are no icons) and choose "New"
and "Shortcut" from the menu. In the first box type or copy and paste the
following:

SHUTDOWN.exe -s -t 01

Give your shortcut a name and click "Finish". You can then the
shortcut on your desktop or drag it into your start menu or Quick Launch
bar.

Hint: Don't click the shortcut unless you're ready to shutdown!"

Has anyone had experience with this, or any known fish hooks?

Thank you,
Dumb bell.

177383 2003-09-23 11:08:00 Why should there be any "fish hooks"?

Its been a legitimate command in Windows 2000 and XP since .. Windows 2000 at least. It may even have been a carry over from NT4, but unsure.

Its not available under Windows 95,98 or ME

If you want the full list of options drop to a command line prompt and type:
shutdown /?

Its not a shutdown "in a flash" by the way. Takes around the same time.

177384 2003-09-23 11:31:00 If you want to shutdown quickly just press the on/off button - on most computers this will cleanly shut down XP. pompeymike (4601)
177385 2003-09-23 11:50:00 I agree. The power button is the quickest, provided the PC has been configured for a single press to shutdown, and hold for 5 seconds to force an immediate power off.

If its been configured to force an immediate power down on a single press its a tad drastic.

177387 2003-09-24 00:41:00 I agree the power nutton at the front is a good choice.

The power switch is even more fun for windows!
