2013-07-02 08:18:00 | Hi all, I have a laptop that is being strange. So it asks me reboot and select proper boot device, first thing i thought was corrupt mbr. So i made a repair usb and repaired installation. It sat on starting windows for about 15 before it even came up with the setup process. After doing the repair it then said the mbr is missing even though i just did a repair. It also sits on the post splash screen for about a minute before continuing. Something is very weird here. I just completed my first semester as a pc tech and this makes me feel retarded lol. Any ideas on what could be wrong? Im starting to think its the hard drive itself.

Just in case something else (like a USB flash drive is plugged in), remove it. It maybe trying to boot from it. And it'll say select proper boot device if there's nothing on it |

2013-07-02 08:24:00 | Yeah this was the very first thing i did. Oddly the HDD wasnt marked as the boot disk but i changed that. HDD is detected too but makes a few clicking noised when pc is turned on but can still get it to windows repair after waiting 20 mins on the windwos is starting screen | osbornezo (16903) | |
2013-07-02 08:30:00 | Sounds like the hdd is ready to die if its clicking. And it shouldnt take 15-20 mins to get into windows. | Speedy Gonzales (78) | |
2013-07-02 08:33:00 | If the HDD is starting to make clicking noises, that can indicate its starting to fail. Read the drives SMART that will tell you in theres anything obvious. One program that gives you a instant reading of the SMART is CrystalDiskInfo you can download it from here (crystalmark.info), get the zipped version and run it as administrator. Even if the SMART is reading OK, that still doesn't mean the drive doesn't have a fault. Look in the eventvwr logs as well. Can also be malware/ infections causing problems. May have nothing to do with the MBR Failing sectors will cause the exact problem you describe - theres several reasons it can be. :) IF theres any data on the drive not backed up get it backed up yesterday in case the drive turns turtle. ;)

2013-07-02 08:39:00 | Thanks for the responses, i can't actually boot to windows, the closest thing i have gotten into is the repair mode. I guess my best option since i cant boot to windows is to try get back into repair mode and use the CLI? The thing is after the first repair i did afterthat i havent been able to get back into repair mode which frustrates me. I dont get an option to press any key to boot from CD/DVD as im using a usb stick. This is a hell of a mess lol | osbornezo (16903) | |
2013-07-02 08:47:00 | You can still check the state of the HDD. Remove it from the Laptop, Attach it to another PC, run CrystalDiskInfo and select the laptop drive. If theres data you need to recover, you may be able to get into windows folder structure and copy it off to another PC. As long as the drive spinning up and the heads haven't gone Rassspppppp :D theres ways to get data off. Wouldn't go worrying to much about repair mode, its not that good at repairing sometimes. You will be better off using the CMD window with the appropriate commands fixing it ( if its fixable)
