1347603 2013-07-01 05:21:00 Hi folks,
For the last few days, we have been unable to send emails either by way of reply or from the Email tab. Receiving mail is no problem, but when attempting to reply or compose a new email, we get "A problem occurred while trying to open this message. A problem has occurred. Please try again."
Using Win 7 Home Premium, service pack 1. Please help.

1347604 2013-07-02 06:50:00 Seems to be a common problem and all the advice I've read suggested doing a repair (or uninstall-reinstall) install of Windows Live Mail. Unfortunately most people are reporting back that this did not resolve their problem.

One person here (www.smartestcomputing.us.com) said adding a rule to their firewall fixed it.

Are you using a 3rd party firewall?

1347605 2013-07-04 05:59:00 No, only that which was preinstalled with new puter Not sure what it is, and am using AVG. From the little I have been able to find on the net re this issue, it would appear the m/soft have been unable to resolve it. Will try the firewall fix.

1347606 2013-07-04 06:07:00 No go there, its an allowed program in the windows firewall. Contacted my ISP and all they could suggest was to use a webmail for sending/replying. It works, but is a nuisance and long winded.

1347607 2013-07-04 07:09:00 I would consider installing a free email program such as Thunderbird.

1347608 2013-07-04 07:30:00 Seen this once before - try this:

Go to Control Panel.

Under Programs, click Uninstall a Program.
Locate Windows Live Essential then click Uninstall/Change.
When a window appears, select Repair all Windows Live programs.
Restart your computer, try the mail again

Failing that, this may work, its quoted from Microsoft:

It is possible that Mail.MsMessageStore file was corrupted. Please follow the steps below on how to repair the file:

1. Restart the computer (this is to ensure that Live Mail is fully shut down, and that none of it's components are in use when the computer starts)

2. Click Start, type CMD but do not press enter

3. You will see cmd.exe in the search results, right click on it and select Run as Administrator - type your admin password if asked, and if UAC pops up asking permission, allow it

4. You should now see the command prompt, with the following displayed:

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7600]

Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Windows\system32>

5. Copy the following (press Ctrl+C):

esentutl.exe -d "%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\Mail.MSMessageStore"

Note: the "" are necessary

6. Right click in the command prompt Window, and select Paste, so you now see the following:

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7600]

Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Windows\system32>esentutl.exe -d "%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\Mail.MSMessageStore"

7. Press enter. esentutl will now defragment the Live Mail database file

8. Once done, you can close the command prompt, and restart the PC again

1347609 2013-07-05 05:53:00 Ok, thanks Wai. Tried both of those suggestions, first one made no difference, the second one is where things got ugly. Ran it as directed, restarted, tried to open Live mail but got a message to the effect that mailbox data is being used by another program such as a virus scanner. (0x800C0155,2) was the I assume error code. Also tried uninstalling Windows Essentials 2011 and downloaded and installed 2012 version. Still get the same message when attempting to open. Just about ready to abandon Live mail and try Thunderbird as suggested by Jen. Will keep watching for any further suggestions. Thanks for your help.

1347610 2013-07-05 06:05:00 What other AV programs were installed, before you installed AVG?? Have you scanned your system lately? Have you tried disabling AVG then trying to see if it works? Speedy Gonzales (78)
1347611 2013-07-05 06:19:00 Had machine for just over a year, came with Nortons for a short time. Dumped that and went with AVG as had used it for years with no issues. Tried disabling AVG and even did a System Restore as the timing of the start of the issue was around the time of an AGV update. Initially the restore failed so went back another week, and that was ok. All made no difference.

1347612 2013-07-05 06:28:00 Run the norton removal tool. (support.norton.com) See if it removes remnants of it. Some files may still be on the system Speedy Gonzales (78)
