We were monitoring a Fantails nest outside our en-suite a month ago, heard 2 cats scraping in the early hours of the morning chased them off. Looked at a wrecked nest on the ground the next morning a few feathers and 3 less Fantails. Time to put cats on a curfew and delete the rest, before I do. So sad. She wears a bell on her collar, and although she like to hunt, she never catches anything (except for the occasional cicada). And since she was a kitten, she is kept inside at night during the hours of darkness. As usual, it's not the animals that are the problem, it's irresponsible owners. |

| 1324005 | 2013-01-21 20:51:00 | Get rid of all cats and there will be a plague of rats, as happened in the Orongorongos some years back when they had a drive to get rid of feral cats. Rats do more damage to nests, eggs and newly hatched chicks than do cats. |
