A Boeing 787 Dreamliner operated by Japan's All Nippon Airways (ANA) has made an emergency landing in in western Japan. All the passengers and crew were evacuated safely.

The incident comes on top of a slew of recent problems with Boeing's new airliner. According to ANA, there was an error message regarding battery malfunction.

Hopefully not in itself, but the birth of the Dreamliner has been more a Cesarean section than a successful rollout. Air NZ is having second thoughts since the FAA restricted the distance the aircraft can fly over water from the nearest airport. That essentially resulted in the aircraft being unable to operate over the long stage lengths Air NZ need.

As the BBC said, most of the incidents have been minor, but their frequency is unsettling.

1323028 2013-01-16 05:11:00 Have you seen what lightning does to carbon fibre?

I think they have chosen the wrong material for building an aircraft - only time will tell if they (Boeing) were right or wrong.

I certainly hope it is the former.

1323031 2013-01-16 08:43:00 I think the biggest mistake Boeing made was to make the plane in so many countries.
They have parts coming from all over.
Obviously to make ti cheaper etc.

But these are what have caused the huge delays which has obviously cost them a lot of money.

Its hard enough for Airbus to make a plane in 4 counties.

1323032 2013-01-16 08:58:00 I heard the Airbus 380 was rather big - - but 4 counties? The fuel would be past it's use-by date by the time it made it's way in from the outboard tanks. R2x1 (4628)

Safety regulators in the United States have grounded all Boeing 787 Dreamliners until batteries onboard are proved safe.

In a statement the Federal Aviation Administration said because of the potential battery fire risk United States airlines must "temporarily cease operations."

United Airlines is currently the only US airline operating the 787, with six airplanes in service but overseas authorities generally follow the lead of the FAA to cover fleets operating in their own countries.

Two Japanese airlines yesterday voluntarily grounded the planes after a battery problem.

Before the FAA announcement, Air New Zealand said it "remains committed" to the Boeing 787 despite problems plaguing the aircraft that led to its grounding in Japan.

The New Zealand airline has ordered 10 of the next model of the Dreamliner, the first of which is due for delivery around the middle of next year.

Asked about Air New Zealand's view of the recent incidents and what it had heard from Boeing, a spokeswoman said: "Air New Zealand remains committed to our aircraft orders."
