It would make people think twice about adopting a cat then dumping it (where it then becomes a feral problem) The chickens were semi mature Silkie bantams. Not really the fighting type. Those Rhode reds are fighters though! Our Silkies were real scrapers, our cats were terrified of them |

| 1324039 | 2013-01-23 08:49:00 | A few years ago I looked after some friends' pets for them. Their pet family was a couple of Whippets (aka smaller Greyhounds) and the family cat. The family cat was a Maine Coon weighing in about 13kg, and what a brilliant creature! I'm not a cat person normally but this one won me over. Having said that it was reputedly a hunter of fearsome repute, although thankfully I wasn't presented with any of the vanquished. The cat was chosen initially because of the breed's reputation of being able to peacefully co-exist with dogs. |

| 1324040 | 2013-01-23 09:04:00 | The study carried out by John Flux and reported on Campbell Live tonight and published in the New Zealand Journal of Zoology may not please Gareth Morgan and the cat haters as it reinforces what has been said in this thread about cats killing rats and actually helping to maintain bird life www.3news.co.nz www.tandfonline.com |

But for getting that which they have so richly earned, Politicians should be getting first lick of the green paste. Rats and Cats dead heat for 2nd. Slow acting green paste of course. |

| 1324043 | 2013-01-29 21:43:00 | Poor little pussies are being blamed again (www.nzherald.co.nz). With the current paranoid obsessions with safety and protection against all risks, I reckon a fortune could be made by someone who makes and sells cocoons for people to go inside where they are sheltered from all germs, bugs and other natural hazards..... " It means, for a pregnant woman, that you can't eat out at a restaurant for nine months, you can't eat at a friend's house, you and your partner are the only ones that can be trusted to serve you food." I mean just how paranoid can one get ? |

| 1324047 | 2013-02-03 21:52:00 | Bob Brockie on cats in todays Dominion Post: www.stuff.co.nz Quote: "Setting thousands of traps, Dr Fitzgerald calculated the number of cats and rats in the Orongorongo Valley for 23 years. The cats held the rat numbers in check for years but when cat numbers fell, the rat population shot up. The cats also held the riverbed rabbits in check and their population also shot up when the cats disappeared" Most people except Morgan should be able to see the link between cat numbers and rat population. I agree with Morgan that cat colonies should be removed where they have become established in urban areas and are being fed by locals, as seen on TV the other night. A hard decision but best for everyone in the long run. |
