1324028 2013-01-22 19:09:00 He's just got a thing about cats.

Here:
All extinct birds:
en.wikipedia.org

NZ extinct birds:
www.kedgley.school.nz
%20Fact%20Sheets/DOCS/1/extinct.htm

And how many of those were cats?

He could get rid of them, it wouldn't cure the problem.

Also cats eat other things - rats, mice, rabbits.
Friend lives in a farmhouse in the Waikato, hers eats rabbits, doesn't want cat food. Mostly baby rabbits....aw cute little baby bunnies being killed....right.

Imagine the population explosion in rats and rabbits if the cats disappeared. I know this for a fact, mine kills next doors rats. They breed fast enough that she hasn't eliminated them all, but I sure don't have a rat problem over here.

(apart from the one time she bought one to me...but she never did it again).

Last night she went under the fence, I watched, sure enough....a rat.

I think he had a different exterminating technique in mind. Cats in large numbers are pretty hard to swallow.

1324031 2013-01-22 21:40:00 Perhaps we should also eradicate hawks, harriers, falcons, moreporks, after all they also eat other native birds.

I saw the Morgan fellow on TV last night, underneath an attempted appearance of sanity he was obviously paranoid about cats.

He just hasn't thought the thing through. As pctek says, and as surveys have shown, cats are most effective at keeping the rat population down.

Rats are much better tree climbers and nest raiders than cats.

When it comes to eradicating pests in order to protect native species, the problem has to be tackled on a wide front, it's no use removing one threat only to have another proliferate.

I'd say tackle possums, rats, stoats, wild pig, feral cats first of all. Domestic cats would be down the list in my book.

1324032 2013-01-22 23:53:00 Feral cats are bad news, city cats aren't *that* bad, it's the semi rural ones that cause the most damage.

It is true they keep the rodents down but they also severely affect the skink and NZ lizard population. If we can erradicate rodents down to a controllable level we can start getting rid of the cats. I don't mind them but my preference is to live without them. A friends neighbours cat ate some of their chickens, neighbours said your fault. Build a fence. A few months later it killed their Cockatiel, again their fault for not keeping their bird safe, then it started digging up their garden and sh*tting in the food and the kids sand pit. Friends said keep your cat under control or we'll shoot it (they live quite a way out of town, neighbours built a "lifestyle" block next door) neighbours said "yeah right" a few months of warnings later and they drop the dead feline off on their door with a very apologetic note saying sorry you were warned. Neighbours had a rage but gave up after they called the cops who pretty much said well tough bikkies, you were given a 18 months of notices to do something and the animal was on someone elses property.

1324033 2013-01-23 01:11:00 Yeah....it's people see.
The cat killing neighbours birds should have been sorted by the owner.

The majority of problem cats this area are the unneutered males.
They attack anything that moves, including other cats, rivals or not. They have huge territories too.
The neutered ones tend to stick around and don't go much past the house next door.

Chickens....they must have been young ones though, I had chooks once, waited to see what would happen with the cats.
Cats found out real fast that the chickens are quite large and can fight. Cats ran away whimpering.....didn't bother them again.
Little chicks though.....I can see that happening.....

They should make some rules like with dogs. Limit numbers, required to be neutered, micro chipped and controlled.
That would solve heaps of problems, you would think the SPCA would agree on that one.

1324034 2013-01-23 02:46:00 I would agree with introducing control similar to dogs. It would make people think twice about adopting a cat then dumping it (where it then becomes a feral problem)

The chickens were semi mature Silkie bantams. Not really the fighting type. Those Rhode reds are fighters though!

1324035 2013-01-23 04:02:00 The cats dont seem to bother the chooks but the chooks dont seem all that happy when a cat walks by they get a bit jumpy, mine anyway. Different story with dogs lost 2 chickens to 2 dogs but I got the last chicken killing dog with my crossbow. Have strategically placed pieces of concrete to throw at any dog that I see on my property. I really wish people would keep their dogs under control so I dont have to kill them. prefect (6291)

I suppose a line has to be drawn somewhere, maybe next in line after rats ?
