You'll learn to type faster over years of use, and in NZ, there's no need for typing lessons. Type slower if you have to, if you've never really done that before, but we should realistically in high school be presuming some level of proficiency with computers (Even if it's basic, basic enough to use a word processor / spreadsheet / type), and actually start on the *real* stuff sooner. Stuff like: This is your HDD, this is what it looks like physically, this is how your PC sees it. This is a filesystem. This is the command prompt. This is dual-booting. This is Linux. This is partitioning. This is what a CPU is. This is the difference between RISC vs CISC. This is what RAM used to look like in 1995. This is an ISA bus vs PCI vs AGP vs PCIe. Stuff like that, stuff that's actually kinda interesting! |

We got some of that in year 10 - like showing old school ram, hard drives.. but NCEA focuses on real boring stuff, like simple word processing, yet people still fail. Programming was also part of the NCEA course where a lot of people struggled probably due to the fact that most of the teachers don't know programming. I took the Cambridge course which focuses on databases, spreadsheets and web design along with some theory work. Far better than NCEA IMO. |

| 1323433 | 2013-01-20 07:21:00 | I took ICT in year 10. It was a typing class, and it was SO ****ing boring. I had the fastest typing rate of anyone in the class, but the teacher wanted me to be able to touch type, which was slower. Bleh. Plus we had to do SPELLING exercises. I kid you not. Now apparently the school's offering these courses and I would have killed to take them, hard or not,. I mean hell I would've found out that university's useless if they are indeed at such a level. Because I'm 3 years into a degree and I feel like I've learned nothing. Just finished Year 10 DIT. Did a little bit of touch typing. I'm faster without that... We never did anything to do with hardware and other interesting things like that! All I ever did was spreadsheets, music videos, html, creating images etc. Never learned anything new really. I think I know how you felt/feel. I'm taking Computer Science this year...hopefully learn something! |
