One computer Win XP home has the ip address 192.168.0.1 and subnet 255 etcc

Win 98 has 192.168.0.2 same subnet
(the win 98 network card when you goto properties you can set a network address on it, we set it to not present. its a realtek card)

We have tried all sorts of networking guides to no sucess. Even proxies.
Win XP can see Win 98 computer and self but cant access it, andonly sometimes win98 can view itself.

win xp cannot ping win 98 and vice versa. Using a UTP Cat 5 Crossover Cable (RJ45 - RJ45)

what puzzles us is why wont it !!

Win xp has built in network card

178056 2003-09-26 04:22:00 Uhh read through and follow the full Networking FAQ in the FAQs section for the win98 computer.

Firstly, make sure they are the same workgroup. Share a folder on the win98 computer, so when you click on it from the xp computer, it will have something to access.

Give about 10mins after a reboot and so on to establish connectivity. And turn on the guest account on the XP computer.

178057 2003-09-26 04:40:00 Uninstall the network card on Win98 (Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Device Manage [tab] > Network Cards - select Realtek and remove).
Then go into the Network Device Manager (Control Panel > Network) and remove all protocols and what not.
Then reboot the machine, upon booting it should say it detected the card and wants drivers for it. Once it has done this set the IP Address, Subnet Mask, Gateway and all relevant settings for TCP/IP only. Don't worry about changing settings inside the Realtek driver. Set your Hostname and workgroup and away goes Win98. Make sure you have Client for Microsoft Networks set as your logon manager.
On WinXP open the network control panel thing and then right click on Local Area Network Connection or whatever your LAN connection is called and click properties. Go into the middle tab of the 3 that are up there and then take all ticks out of everything on the middle tab. (sorry but I don't have XP available at the moment). Save all your settings and away you go.
This should sort the connectivity issues.

For Filesharing, either put the logon details of your Win98 machine (eg: create a new user with the username and password you use to log windows 98 in), or use simple file sharing.
