177939 2003-09-25 21:49:00 Anyone noticed the network status (www.xtra.co.nz) of Xtra?

It might be fixed by the time you read it, but at the moment, it says
Issue: Connecting from areas in area code 07
Period: Inactive
Resolution: Technicians are currently working on this issue.

Issue: Connecting from areas in area code 09

Looks like Telecom has cut their own wires :p

But what gets me, is that inside the yellow box that details the network status, there is a picture of a guy smiling happily - must be an indicator of how much Telecom likes bad networks. :D

177940 2003-09-25 22:20:00 Must be a beaut outage as it was down at 07:30 and it's still down here in Mount Maunganui. B.M. (505)

Yeah, don't you just feel like wiping that smirk right off his face? :p :D

Incidentally Agent, thanks for that link . I'm having quite a bit of fun browsing though Xtra's rather interesting "How to guides" ( . co . nz/help/0,,4155-2675992,00 . html" target="_blank">xtra . co . nz) . They are quite good and I have learnt a few new tricks already .

Another link for the bookmarks . :-)

177942 2003-09-26 00:34:00 I understand that they have to have a network status page but it is a bit ironic that if the network is down you cant get to that page......

< rant mode on >

and why is it that even when the netowrk is down and I dial in from other ISP I see telecom saying "it all ok"

and while I am bashing telecome :-)
why is it that they have decided to stop all there servers responding to ping packets?
I was setting up a customers system the other day and we dialed in to xtra but could not open any web pages. I decided to try and ping xtra.co.nz and see if the conection was working. I got no responde I tryed pinging man.co.nz and got no responde. this made me spend about an hour testing a connection that had no fault...

< Rant mode off >

I must say that if I had been thinking I would have noticed that the ping was getting DNS and so the connection was good.

the above rant is in no way to put down telecom and if you are a happy custmer of telecom then I am happy for you.

177943 2003-09-26 02:08:00 I found out when the gateway kept dialling and disconnecting earlier this morning... Gave up and finally called Xtra's "What's wrong with our network at this point in time" service... Anyway...

I am continually amazed at the people who enjoy Xtra bashing on this forum. Seems as if they have nothing better to do then get their post count up by trying to offend Xtra. What about the newbies that come to the forum seeking help and say "Hey, this isn't a help forum any more, this is a bash Xtra forum!" or "Xtra's my ISP and I want help, however if they're going to hassle me about using Xtra then I'll go somewhere else".

And I mean because Xtra's so great, they even planned this whole outage to test their helpdesk service. I mean hey, who's awake and wanting to check their emails at 7:00 this morning? Get a life.

I don't recall seeing a thread taking the mickey out of compass communications when their 2 DNS Servers were taken down about 4 weeks ago, or what about Ihug with their Ultra problem which left some of it's users without their connection - oh that's right - it's only fun insulting Xtra.

I'm also surprised that people don't commend the good works of Xtra - free antivirus scanning and now Spam Filtering (available in November) along with some other stuff... Hang on, we can't commend Xtra, after all we're here to give them hell...

That would be because, Xtra is, in many peoples' opinions, the worst ISP out there. In addition to being slow on certain TCP ports they leverage themselves off Telecom whilst pretending to be a separate company.
You worked for them so I really think you have your rose tinted glasses on.

I think you'll find that they are actually a separate company. Just as Honda Cars won't be the same as Honda Motorcycles.

Yet they still have the largest customer base... Strange huh? People heading for the crappiest services!

I wish.. Haven't worked for Xtra yet

177948 2003-09-26 04:50:00 Yet it's still not often you hear of Compass Communications customers, is it.

Yes, Xtra might provide reasonable service. But as an ISP run by a company who hold a monopoly on the phone cabling in New Zealand, you would expect that they would be able to provide the utmost best service ever, and make sure that their traffic gets priority over the cables etc... yet somehow they manage to stop dialup access to their customers in the 09 and 07 regions.

Did you figure that these two regions would hold the largest share of Xtra's customers? And that there would be countless unhappy customers who were unable to use a service they pay for for a few hours?

So, you want to know why we don't bash Compass Communications - well who cares if their DNS servers went down, you can specify custom DNS servers, such as Orcon's, to be used instead. Simple solution to the problem.

Who's awake at 0700 hours wanting to check their emails? Far as I know, you get up at 0530 every morning, which kind of makes it look as though you're shooting yourself in the foot... you're even keener than the people who get up at 0700 to check their email, aren't you? :p

What's the point in insulting Ihug, considering they have now merged with an Australian company? Further more, what Ihug Ultra problem - I didn't know about it, and I don't know how many other people did, but if Xtra does hold the largest customer base for an ISP in New Zealand, then you can only expect that a problem with their networks would be widely publicised (although it seems they tried to cover it up, because they didn't release any news bulletins as far as I know, let alone inform their customers just what the problem was).

Free virus scanning on your emails? Like that's really hard... and spam filtering? Orcon already does that, and so do many other ISPs.
