177887 2003-09-25 15:09:00 hello all,
I've just spent the last few hours tweaking out Windows XP (all registry hacks) to get the most out of my computer i.e. more fps in games. Since it was all for games I tested before and after using 3D Mark 2001... the results being (don't laugh):

Before:
5648
After:
4714

Hmmm quite a drop if i do say so myself. It makes me wonder weather all these tweak programs and registry hacks really do work! Maybe m$ actually (partly) did windows right... anyways its 2am, i'm tired and this will probably come out as ramble

177888 2003-09-25 15:56:00 Any chance you could give us a run down as to what tweaks and hacks you did and where you got the info from. I'll remember to stay away from there. I'd recommend blackviper.com for WinXP service tweaking. -=JM=- (16)
177889 2003-09-25 18:54:00 Mmm, that's something I have suspected for a long time, but never had the figures to prove it.

177891 2003-09-26 00:14:00 The golden rule in experimenting is to only change one parameter at a time and then test to see the effect. It takes a long time, but at least you know what has done what, and you can then always reverse an undesirable tweak. :D Terry Porritt (14)
177892 2003-09-26 01:07:00 Try useing Xteq Systems and see if you can reverse changes.

177893 2003-09-26 01:44:00 I am using both manually editing the registry and also using Customizer XP...

I've done the following tweaks (some work better on different systems, i.e. When i enabled ultraDMA-66 support my machine would get stuck in a infinite boot/restart loop, apparently it works better on Intel boards...)

'Disable NT Executive Paging'
'Optimize I/O Page Lock Limit'
'Disable NTFS Last Access Time'
'Disable Windows Tracking features'
and disabled autoplay, and the other standard stuff.

Some tweaks can really make your machine unstable i.e. changing how much page file is used etc... just have to get it right, i've got a good combo at the moment!
