177784 2003-09-25 03:28:00 I have been using Cheyenne Bitware to manage my fax and phone messages but now find that there is no support for the software that came with the modem I use.

I have been having problems with receiving faxes in that "sometimes" the faxes are not correctly received. The software recognises that there is a fax and starts to connect then disconnects before receiving the fax.

Can this problem be rectified or should I upgrade to another system?

If so, can anyone recommend suitable software as I am finding it hard to locate.

177785 2003-09-25 04:02:00 It would help if you could state what operating system, as software will often be very OS dependent. godfather (25)
177786 2003-09-25 04:26:00 Hi Godfather

I am using Windows XP.

The problem appears to be intermittent, with some faxes getting through OK. I can actually watch the process on screen if I hear the phone ring and the software kicks in.

Cheers

177787 2003-09-25 04:56:00 Hi there,

If you've been using Bitware successfully on that PC for some time, good chance any recent fault lies elsewhere:

1/ Maybe the sender's fax machine.

2/ Maybe the phone line - have you recently added call waiting, or hooked up burglar alarms, extensions etc?

3/ Maybe another program on your PC - what have you changed or added recently?

If you REALLY want a new program, Winfax Pro (from Symantec) is THE fax app. and costs around $150. Does everything, integrates with Outlook etc. BUT will take you time to learn it, and needs a decent PC (say at least P400 / 128 MB - anything less will choke on Winfax!).

177788 2003-09-25 05:24:00 Hi Martnz

There have been a number of programs installed on the machine over time. There is no actual time when I can pinpoint when the problem started.

My phone system has had no changes and I originally considered that it may be the sender's problem as I have had test faxes sent that were OK but this has happened with more than one sender.

WinFax Pro is no good (I deleted my copy) as it only works on faxes and i need the phone messaging process as well.

177789 2003-09-25 05:28:00 Try uininstalling the program then re-installing, if I remember correctly bitware will remember settings and address book, but it would pay to back them up just in case. Scotty D (491)
177790 2003-09-25 05:29:00 Is there a problem using the XP built-in fax software?

From memory the early bitfax was 16 bit software, and if so could be flakey.

I also wonder if its a modem problem? Internal PCI modems can get upset due to hardware and software changes on the PC, they totally rely on getting the attention of the CPU all the time.

177791 2003-09-25 06:07:00 Hi Guys

Firstly, any XP software for faxing doesn't utilise phone messages (voice mail) so is no good.

As far as uninstalling and then re-installing goes, I have tried that in the past. The word flaky seems to sum up the process and it may be due to XP clashes, although I think it may have been happening before I upgraded to XP.

177792 2003-09-25 10:37:00 I tried the PC as a voice message and fax system in the late '90s.

After a frustrating few months I bought an electronic answering machine and a fax. All connected via a small PABX, all DIY.

Never had a problem since.

177793 2003-09-26 03:23:00 Hi Gary,

Guess we are getting into some grey areas which make it hard to pin down exactly what is going on.

Imagine that Bitfax worked satisfactorily on a PC running (say) Windows 98, and this program was vital for your business.

If that same PC was upgraded to Windows XP, it is entirely possible (but no idea how likely), that your Bitfax version might never work properly under XP. In these circumstances, choices are:

1/ If XP is vital, and the upgraded system is otherwise stable, look at XP's software compatibility settings - maybe can make Bitware think it is still on a W98 machine.
OR see if Winfax Pro (XP version, for faxing) will sit alongside Bitware (for voice).

2/ If Bitware is vital, and the XP upgrade is giving problems, revert to the previous OS. If you really need XP, have it on another machine.
