178505 2003-09-27 23:41:00 U know when u try to connect to ISP and it comes up with unable to connect, invalid user or pass (and u know my PC is right), is there a way to keep it trying like it would if it was engaged,ie. 99 times?

Its just that my ISP was obviously overloaded today and I had to keep clicking connect.

Just wondering, and I would imagine it would be far more hassle than its worth but ya never know.

Cheers.

178506 2003-09-27 23:47:00 It is possible - you can set the amount of times your computer will retry to connect before giving up. Some details like O.S. Would be helpful cyberchuck (173)
178507 2003-09-27 23:58:00 Its not as simple as setting it to redial a set number of times.
That works for "normal" events such as a busy line.

It sounds like the events you are getting are more in the nature of an error, and Windows by default traps the errors, requiring user input.

We are making an assumption that it is Windows in this case?

178508 2003-09-28 00:02:00 Yep, sorry, assuming, pretty much any windows (XP) with IE (the majority have the same dial up options).

Godfather that sounds pretty much it.

178509 2003-09-28 00:06:00 There is no point as this error indicates that there is a problem with your username or password.
You do not know your password is correct as you can't see what is there, even a space accidently entered will cause it to fail.
Delete your username and password and retype them in your dialup connection, make sure you have caps lock off.

Win XP has a habit of forgetting your password and it needs to be reentered sometimes.

If it still does not work call your ISP as there may be a problem with your account.

178510 2003-09-28 01:17:00 Nah mate, my guess is the ISP, possible overload, because i never changed the details, i restarted and still same, waited and finally was allowed on about 20 minutes after initial try. So I rang up helpdesk to hear expect delays, I connected to the net while I was on hold music so the helpdesk there is amazing (haha-I didn't get thru). Scotty D (491)
178511 2003-09-28 04:08:00 Another point is that you are specifically not allowed to "attack dial" like this. That is one of the conditions of your telephone service. If you are getting an authorisation error, dialling again will not help. Graham L (2)
178512 2003-09-28 04:22:00 Well thats also my point that the info ie username and password were correct and dialling again is what was needed, until they let me in. But I beleive u that it is not allowed, just thought someone might know something else. Scotty D (491)
178513 2003-09-28 04:36:00 The authorisation process is not a "they" which lets you in or not . It's carefully written (we hope) code which runs on a reliable (we hope)computer . If it says "no" now, it will say "no" again and again . :D

It's usually a separate computer from the main data handling ones, so if it's down, it will be stopping all others who might be calling in . If it's a busy time, the help phone line will be clogged by other people, but when they reboot the aurthorisation computer you and all the others will get back in . Just try again at reasonable intervals .

Your nuclear reactor won't go critical in the time you can't log in . :D

178514 2003-09-28 09:28:00 bah.....,You pay for a service and its up to them to provide it,So imo "attack dialling" is not only permissible, but to be promoted,Hopefully they will get the msg and install more modems at there end.

Why would they improve the service if everyone went "oh well, guess ill try again later"...hell no,keep on hitting it till you get on,then refuse to disconect, ever, while your at it,ring em and tell em they suck.
