178453 2003-09-27 23:01:00 The commerce commision defines it as "speeds which exceed that of narrowband" *rollseyes*..
Then we wonder why we don't have decent broadband services in NZ...

178454 2003-09-28 00:09:00 Broadband is exactly what it says :-) broader bandwidth therefore more data throughput than narrowband. Broadband is a lot faster.

Jetstream utilisies the unused bandwidth on your telephone line so it is effectively broadband, just uses a different medium.

178456 2003-09-28 00:49:00 Telecom probably define it as a 56K modem.

No actually in their latest ad on TV they say JetStart is not a broadband connection and are saying that 512kbps is broadband.

They have upped the antey a small bit.

178457 2003-09-28 00:58:00 If I were the Minister of Communications or whatever it is in this ridiculed country of ours, then I would make it mandatory that any service advertised as 'broadband' must have a minimum downstream speed of 1MB/s and minimum upstream of 512KB/s.

Has anyone seen Xtra's new television advertisement for Jetstream whatever service it was they were advertising?

Features George Jetson waddling around talking about the twenty-first century and broadband... razzle-dazzle whatnot and crap advertising like a comparison of how fast an image downloads on Jetstream compared to dial-up.

If you ask me, they're trying to reel in customers of the age-group who grew up watching the Jetsons and the Flinstones (yes, Mr Yabbah-Dabbah-Doo Fred Flinstone stars in the commercial too, tapping away with a chisel at a stone computer monitor - Xtra's way of saying that dial-up is the equivalent of the stone-age) who might not actually realise how bad the state of fast internet in our country is.

In my opinion (and if you compare "broadband" in New Zealand to broadband in the USA or Europe), fast internet access in New Zealand is currently residing in the stone-age.

178458 2003-09-28 01:05:00 AFAIK Telecom define broadband as 256k and above
There own ads state JS Starter is not broadband

178459 2003-09-28 01:13:00 Definition: The term broadband refers to any type of transmission technique that carries several data channels over a common wire. DSL services, for example, combine separate voice and data channels over a single telephone line -- voice fills the low end of the frequency spectrum and data fills the high end. metla (154)

That's a bit excessive considering cybercafe's connections range between 2MB/s - 8MB/s usually. Don't forget IDG host PF1 on 10MB/s and that would mean having to upgrade their connection to keep up with demand.

Has anyone read about this (www.idg.net.nz).. Bet the Commerce Commission are kicking themselves now

178461 2003-09-28 01:22:00 Ah, but what happens when VoIP (Voice over IP) starts getting taken up in New Zealand (not that it'll take a short time or anything...), because from what I've heard, it requires a substantial amount of bandwidth due to it's capabilities and quality. agent (30)
