178230 2003-09-26 10:08:00 I want to download photos from My Pictures to a CD. Thought I was following through with the instructions, but when the programme gets so far along, it says there is no disc in....but there is.
Removed disc....put it back in....pressed "next"....won't work.
This is on XP, by the way. Can't find anything in book (Dummies book....right title :8}

Also tried to send a complete file of photos to friend with W95, but Outlook couldn't do it....would that be because file too big, with 15 or so photos, to go to 95?
HELP, please. First time I've tried to do either of these things, so it must be operator error! :_|

It would be safe to assume this is because the total file size would be rather large :D. Try only sending 2-3 at a time, depending on the file sizes - also make sure they are not bitmap format (.bmp), but jpeg (jpg). Also check with the receiver of these photo's, because if they are on dial-up they will take some time to download - they may prefer the emails to sent spaced apart in time.

OK, what "programme" are we tallking about here?

What type of CD are we talking of? (CD-R, CD-RW) and brand?

Just confirm that the CD Drive is a CD Burner, not just a CD reader drive?

You need to look at the size of the photos in Windows Explorer, and see how big they are. 15 photos could easily choke an elephant, let alone an e-mail mailbox. You need to consider how long it will take for the recipient on dial-up to download them. They probably would not like to have to connect for 2 days to clear their e-mail, as an extreme example.

When you say "Outlook couldn't do it" what exactly happened?

I am guessing that an error box did not appear saying "sorry I couldn't do that", so anything that did happen would point us in the right direction.

Ain't computers fun. What would you and PJ do without them (NO! don't tell us!)

178233 2003-09-26 12:47:00 It depends on which ISP you're with, and how big the 15 pics are altogether. Some ISP's have a limit of 1mb, and then the ISP wont let you send them via email. Coz it'll flood the server /slow it down.

The easiest way to copy photos or data to a CD, is to use a program like CDCreator/DirectCD. XP's builtin CD burning sux! It cant/doesnt support
packet-writing. So, u cant format a CD, if you wanted to. And what do you want to view the photos on later? A PC or something else?

I spose zipping them would lower the filesize a bit.

178234 2003-09-27 09:06:00 PJ Here. Maryann was using the XP My Pictures/Kodak Photos programme. She asked it to copy selected Pictures to CD as in the on board instructions. I take this to be the MS CD copy programme. However it said on screen that it was "Copying" & the data was moving across the little window from icon to icon, but no movement in the Progress Bar. Nor was the "Writing" light showing on the CD Burner Drive (Mustak mrw-4432. We left it for 30mins & gave it away.

I also tried with Nero V5.5. I got as far as moving a picture file to the right hand window but not across to the left hand (burning?) window. If you have used Nero you will know what I mean?

In Paras 1&2 it consistently said" No disk in drive". Yes there was & in the CD Burning drive.

As to sending photos by e-mail. That is ok now. We tried smaller groups & it still would not work. Today?? Tried the same smaller blocks & OK. Tried the whole 15 at one go & OK. ISP is Xtra.

178235 2003-09-27 09:40:00 PJ again. Further to the Nero part of above.
On the desktop I have an Icon for Nero V5.5 & one for Nero V6. V5.5 is a "Paid For" download. V6 is the current Demo version. If I try to install V6, it tells me that V5.5 is already there & V6 will delete it. Have been thro that once & it does delete, or at least "Scramble its brains". I eventually got another download from AheadNero. V5.5 is ok for me. If I want to keep V6 I will have to buy it. Whilst it does look an improved version is it really neccesary?
QQ Why would the Demo V6 corrupt V5.5?
QQ CloneCd demo has also "run out" & I would have to purchase IT to continue using it. If you HAD to BUY one of them Nero or CloneCD, which would you pick?
QQ Will ANY CD copied with whatever programme run on EVERYTHING else?
Thanks PJ

178236 2003-09-27 10:01:00 I have to ask ...

If you are simply wanting to burn some photos to a CD, why dont you just drag and drop them onto the CD Burner (drive D: probably?).

Windows XP does not need any software (Nero CloneCD etc) for burning data files (only for audio).

Drag and drop (using Windows Explorer) and a little message should pop up saying "you have files waiting to be burnt to CD, click here"

If it still doesn't recognise you have a blank disk in the drive, you either have a dud disk or a dud drive.

Will the disk be readable on other drives? Should be ok in other computers, just don't use CD-RW media (disks). Only CD-R for best compatability. But you have to be able to burn it before you can worry about that. At least CDs are under 50c each now.

Nero V6 will overwrite some system files that are also used by V5. V5 will not be able to use the updated files, so its unable to run.
Stick with V5.5, you will still only use 3.5% of its capabilities.

178237 2003-09-28 02:20:00 OK ALL. All sorted now. We were missing one step along the way. Actually, quite a few things dropped into place whilst reading these posts. Thanktou PJ :D
Ps That doesn't mean we won't be back!!!!! PJ

178238 2003-10-03 10:54:00 Nah XP's builtin burning is crap/ its ok dropping and dragging, but if u need to format xp cant do it. It's builtin burning doesnt support packet-writing hence formatting either. Sometimes u DO have to format, which XP wont / cant do by itself. You need something like CD Creator/DirectCD 5 + or 6.

And NO it wont do music CD's. Well maybe MP3's directly. BUT if u dont use nero or something similar to burn mp3s to cd, (it needs to convert to WAV before any CD or stereo CD/DVD can play the music on that CD) nothing else will read it, but the pc. If your other DVD / CD player on a stereo doesnt support MP3. It wont play it when you put it in the CD.

178239 2003-10-03 10:58:00 Oops forget the MP3 bit :P I tried to stop that bit lol it was lagging a bit
