178172 2003-09-26 07:40:00 A m8 emailed me and asked me to find a laptop suitable for students...and i have a few of my own ideas but want a general opinion from u guys.... he wants it for personal use as well as good enough for uni work..

he wants it to have a dvd player, cdwriter
enough grunt to run madden 2004, tigerwoods 2003 and rugby 2004...
winxp home or pro doesnt matter...
he has microsoft office xp on cd, so it doesnt really matter what it comes with in that mind...
and also hdd space doesnt really matter but 20gig or more is best...
internet access

hope i get some good recommendations from ya guys :D

178179 2003-09-30 07:39:00 I have now set up 4 of the Noel Leeming HP ones . They are quite good value, several colleagues have bought them as well . They must have sold hundreds .

What the advertisement doesnt always tell you (ZE4315, ZE4316 anyway) is that the CPU is a mobile one . Many of these cheaper laptops have a desktop CPU, which means that they run hot . Very hot, especially any AMD based ones . The mobile CPUs are more expensive, and its a surprise to find they are fitted in this price range .

I use a ZE4315 myself and its fine .
It came with 256 MB RAM (shared) and I was goint to take it to 512, but haven't bothered . Goes perfectly well with the 256 .
Some present offerings have 512, 40 GB HDD .

The HP ones with a 15" screen have a very high res screen, 1400 x 1050 I think . As thats the native resolution, games that want 800 x 600 will run in a smaller window . Laptops often dont stretch to full screen as desktops do . Try a game on one in the shop first .

178180 2003-09-30 08:03:00 am glad u have given approval of that hp computer . . .

we gonna go in 2morrow and have a look . . . and would the shop actually let us try a game on it?

and he also mentions he doesnt really mind if the game runs in a smaller window as it would stop him from having to tab+alt out alot when hes expecting a email or something . . . . . but we'll have a go 2morrow i spose . . .
