2003-09-26 10:25:00 | I am not a novice but also not an expert and have a problem of accessing files following a software change. My operating systems are Windows XP Home. I have two computers - they are at different locations and both have their own individual registered versions of XP and all the software etc. and they are not linked in any way. One p.c. had Msoft Works Version 6 installed which I uninstalled as it was a basic Works version the CD showing for "new pcs only". I then installed Msoft Works Suite 2000 which has Word/Atlas/Home Publish etc. and which was on the number 2 p.c. until I installed Msoft Office in that one. So all is good clean software that appeared to install okay. Problem is that with removing Works Version 6 and replacing with Works Suite 2000 - the Word files will not now open and when I try to open a file from Works/Word Vers 6 - in Works/Word2000 - the file opens in the "computer language symbols etc" and says "can not access". I think Version 6 is later than Word 2000 but surely the files created by one should be readable by the other. Please can I get some help as I am not just stuck- I am worried. Appreciate all who may read and assist.

2003-09-26 10:40:00 | Trying to get my head aroubd the issue: The PC which had basic Works on it now has Works suite-Word 2000. Works-Word 2000 will not open the files created with Works basic. If that is the issue, then it points to the known lack of any compatibility between the Works wordprocessor and Word 2000. Thats not unusual, as I don't think there was ever much cross compatibility unless .rtf format was used. If the files are .wps (I think) then they are in the base Works format. Microsoft have a converter program that may suit. Its available here (www.microsoft.com) for download.

You give me a note that Microsoft have a converter program and a link to check this out. It is late now and I think best if I look at doing the download after a bit of shut eye - been up for 16 hours- so if you have a few hints as to what I need do when I get the download this would be very helpful and I can tell you much much apopreciated. Thanks and I will get back to you tomorrow. Please bear with me for a little more time. Regards |

2003-09-26 21:32:00 | To 'Godfather".......I have just tried to download from your reply of last evening but I get a "cannot display page" and no connection to your site. Can you tell me "how" from here on - don't normally have a problem - is it some internet setting that I need change for this link? And is there any help you can give when I get this download as to "how to" etc. Thanks again. | tuktuk (4638) | |

2003-09-26 23:25:00 | Hullo Susan B...and thanks too for help. Seems must be my settings that are causing the problem as others can get it as well. I am unsure which to change, tried some and now put back as was! As you suggested you could get it for me some other way will look forward to your suggestions. | tuktuk (4638) | |
2003-09-26 23:42:00 | Susan B - have just lowered the cookie setting even more and yes - thank you - it works and I have the Microsoft download page. Surprised that settings need be so low for Microsoft site?? Will now read that through and hope this is the answer. Appreciate your help and all others who have contributed. What a great facility this is that PC World offers. Cheers.

2003-09-27 02:48:00 | Just one question, why did you uninstall Works basic version at all? It should have been able to co-exist with Works Suite, then you could simply open these documents in the Works package and "Save as" a format that Word will recognise.

2003-09-28 07:36:00 | Thanks for that godfather. I uninstalled Works Vers 6.0 only as thought with Works Suite 2000 it would be "useless" to leave in. However the download you sent me (I got after changing my cookie settings) has worked great and I can now read the old files. But although the spelling check works well in "Word" it does not operate in Outlook Express now. Can you help on this extra problem. Is it my settings again? I hope you can tell me an easy way or, from what you have mentioned now, do I need reinstall Works Vers 6? If I do that is it necessary for one to be installed before the other? Look forward to hearing again - many thanks. I am also posting this under "spelling in Outlook Express" in case you miss this reply.
