178698 2003-09-28 14:11:00 I'm looking at getting a dvd player but i have thought of getting a xbox as that can do dvds as well as games, and i've seen that there are quite a few good ones around...
so just wanna see what ppl think of xbox actually? is it good for dvd on telly?...what about gaming..is it good?
and the future of xbox?...as i dont really wanna get it..considering playstation have gone from 1 system to ps, ps1, ps2 in 4 years....

178699 2003-09-28 21:07:00 The Xbox can play only zone 4 DVDs whereas most DVD players (which cost half the price) can play all-zones.

You can get the Xbox "mod chipped" which will void your warranty but enable it to play all zones.

Of course though, the Xbox plays games - most of which are not bad at all. They're about the same quality as a high-end PC.

The Xbox has a good future, it's successor is a few years away at least and Xbox Live (which lets you plug your console into the phone line like a modem) is not far away (it may already be available in some areas) let's you play Xbox games online - without the "game version" and hardware hassles sometimes associated with online PC gaming.

Sure you can plug your Xbox into the TV and have a DVD player and games console all-in-one, great for the lounge/spare room etc, it even has 5.1 sound built-in which is a bonus.

The Xbox is a pretty god buy (for the price it is now) and it will stand tall until the next PlayStation (with its rumoured DVD-writing capabilities) comes along.

178700 2003-09-28 22:30:00 I think I'll start by summing this up in a nutshell:

Go for it!

For $450 you can get yourself an XBox, and its the best gaming console to date IMHO.

Get a mod chip and a whole new horizon is expamded! The number of things you can do with it... Its just so cool!

I dont want to get a slap on the wrist for saying that sort of thing though, as in some ways a mod chip is illegal, however there are legal chips and BIOS'es you can use for the purpose of installing Linux that are legal...

Its a fine and very curvey line, so I'll chat to you on MSN sometime if you wanna find out a little more, unless somebody from here specifically wants me to post a lil more..

I can safely say though, its worth every cent of it!

Cheers

178701 2003-09-28 23:09:00 Yup... go the X-Box! You can do more... network it to your PC, stream mp3's and DivX movies right from your PC!

Infinitely more bells and whistles you can play around with. :)

ha ha ha,I'd be pretty upset if a high end pc played games at a max 30fps at a max res of 640x480.Infact,i would be looking for a refund.

Anyway,if i was looking to play tv games i would probally go for an xbox myself,But if i was looking at playing dvd's i would buy a dedicated dvd player, and if i was looking at do pc activities,i would buy a pc.

Xbox is not online playable in NZ,and unless i see a real announcement i wouldn't be using that as a reason to buy one, Nor would i take the online play of a console over the PC way of doing things even if it was available.

All the things an box can do a PC can do 10 times as well,But the damn things are so cheap i cant see you going wrong by purchasing one.

It's a gaming console... what do you expect?

Too simple an analogy. Does streaming DivX and mp3s to your TV or stereo, playing console games, running emulators, and watching DVD's for around the cost of a slightly more expensive DVD player at $400 sound like a bad deal to you?

X-Box Live is coming to NZ. True you shouldn't base your purchase decision on it, but it is coming.

10 times better is obviously a bit of an exaggeration. PC's are cool, but if you already have one, then an X-Box is another item to have which complements your PC if you set it up correctly.

178704 2003-09-29 00:25:00 Lohsing,i don't disagree with you in the slightest,A few freinds of mine have them and are quite happy,I was just giving my views on em,I think the xbox is a great deal,But i would still take my dedicated DVD player and PC :D metla (154)
178705 2003-09-29 00:28:00 Oh for sure! If I didn't follow your advice, I would have hooked up my PC to my TV instead of a standalone DVD and hometheatre system...

But X-Box can be mighty fun once you've 'tweaked' it... ;)

178706 2003-09-29 01:45:00 *Wonders why anyone would want to install linux on an xbox* :D

Did anyone realise you can download XBox emulators for pc, and play all the games??

Coupled with a tv-out connection, dvdrom and a few USB gamepads - what are you missing?? In fact thats probably a better idea, because you have the speed of your computer to drive the game rather than some cheapo 700mhz chipset.

Are you sure about that?...i know of only one working xbox emulator and the only title it can run is Halo and even then not at a speed fast enough to be usable.
