There's more to an economy than software sales. And even if the entire world were to convert to OSS there'd still be sales of games which is software. Countries economies do not solely depend on one thing, and while some countries might be stung a little bit the worst that could practically happen is that Microsoft would end up downsizing.

If countries would end up having economic issues do you really think that (I think it's the German) government would convert the majority of its computers to Linux based software?

I've got a good one:

Men are four:
He who knows not and knows not he knows not, he is a fool--shun him;
He who knows not and knows he knows not, he is simple--teach him;
He who knows and knows not he knows, he is asleep--wake him;
He who knows and knows he knows, he is wise--follow him!

Of course that will never happen as their will always be software markets that will pay for their own (business) software.

I have to say, one of the things that annoys me is where, as an example, a company says send your CV in Microsoft Word format. It would be better to send it in some open standards format. Companies love it when their product becomes the default standard e.g. Microsoft Word. It would be better in rtf format (as an example) or as is now happening XML. Open Source is about choice; you can use it if you want to. I don't like being "forced" into buying Microsoft products being other business'es I deal with also use it.

178890 2003-10-03 09:07:00 I don't think you quite understood my point.

Developing countries such as India currently rely heavily on the computer industry, because it is cheap to develop there.

However, going on, in the event that the entire world switched to OSS, it would most likely be under the political dictatorship of OSS extremists, who would therefore require games and game engines to become OSS.

So, there you go...

But no-one controls OSS.. That's why Microsoft (for use of a name) can't buy it out, because it's tonnes of super nerdy geeks sitting in their garages with making the world a better place by creating competition. (ok, well that might be a bit of a generalization about geeks sitting in their garages doing nothing but coding to make the world a better place, but yeah :-p). And you have to admit that competition is a good thing in business for consumers.
And if no-one person controls this then you can't have political dictatorship..
Which I don't think you could get anyway from people who have strong beliefs in the OSR unless they run for PM or something.. Probably be better suited towards Minister of Informations Technology or something like that..

COME ON!
Since when did manufacturers / retailers blah blah blah start justifying price increases? Why should Microsoft be any different?
