You have CD's around which you can install everything off - eg: PCWorld for IE, maybe the Symantec install CD for Norton, drivers for everything on floppy.
Also some people download the Windows Updates for their OS and then burn them to disk, so when they have to reinstall everything they don't have to spend countless hours for them to come in and it saves a good few hours of time...

How do you do this as it would save a heap of time, following a re-install. when I do my updates the install is done automatically. Updates to XP Office can be saved though.

BTW, the reason for my multi-reinstall problem was a dodgy video card. If I'd realised that, at the start, I could have saved myself a lot of grief!

178849 2003-10-04 14:28:00 This Microsoft Knowledge Base Article describes how to download and save updates for a variety of OS's:
HOW TO: Download Windows Updates and Drivers from the Windows Update Catalog (support.microsoft.com)

And this link here (v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com) is where you can search for the updates in the catalogs.

178850 2003-10-04 22:15:00 As a matter of interest , is there an easier method of getting XP upgrades after a clean installtion than the tedious download from microsoft. For example do PC world or anyone publish them on their CD's on a regular basis veterannz (960)
178851 2003-10-04 22:45:00 yes most pc mags do have them on their cover disks. however due to the time it takes to make disks etc the patchs will be a least 1-2 months old and most mags require permission from MS to redistribute them (which can take even longer). tweak'e (174)
