2003-09-29 02:15:00 | Nah, you're right about the X-Box emulator, etc... if it was as easy as Powa has suggested, then the PS2 would have been done ages ago too. Lo.

2003-09-29 02:20:00 | There are emulators about but you're right about them being rare/not quite 100%. I believe it's more common to chip the console, as once that's done there is a technique where one can rent Xbox games, copy them using the appropriate PC hardware and then play the copy on your chipped Xbox, but then this forum isn't the right place to discuss such things. To the original post author - I'd suggest looking around and see what deal you can find (Electronics Boutique, Central Park, etc), try and get a package with the DVD remote and an extra controller, also try and pick up a copy of Halo and check out TradeMe.co.nz for some cheap 2nd hand games, some places charge $119 for new games which is crazy imo.

2003-09-29 04:34:00 | Halo is one of the best games (and highest selling) for the Xbox, it's basically a first-person shooter set in the future... it's a good, fun game (if FPS is your thing). Keep in mind that it's on it's way to the PC (for superior Halo-ing!!) and its sequel is not far off for the Xbox - still most packs come with this game. To find out more with regards to emulators I'd suggest you search the net, I don't want to be in trouble either for posting links to sites directly! Try google.co.nz and search for "xbox +emulator", etc... but I stay clear of them as what's the point really? It's not like the Xbox is thousands of dollars and if the person can afford a PC powerful enough to run an emulator I'm sure they can afford $379 for the actual console I watch all my DVDs on my PC, mainly because I can't afford a widescreen TV :) but also the picture quality you get from a monitor is superb, you'd be losing a great deal of quality if you do a TV-OUT from your PC to your TV... trust me. Sure the picture may be bigger but it's not the size that counts, it's the er..., quality - I'd suggest if you want to watch DVDs on your TV go for the Xbox, and when you feel like kickin' a ball about you can just load up FIFA and away you go!

2003-09-29 06:18:00 | the xboxs' dvd playback is quite good and yes you can only play pal zone 4 dvds on it. a standalone dvd player doesn't mean you'll get better playback quality - the TV has something to do with it as well. xbox live is comming ( as someone has said ) and its only going to be for broadband users ie jetstream ( and I don't mean satalite either ) .... which leads to the "chipping' question. "chip" your xbox and you first of all loose your warranty! seccondly if you then decided to sell it to someone like cash converters - they won't buy it. with a chipped xbox ( at least at the moment ) you can't use xbox live, and remember some of the specs' of the xbox? it runs a special version of windows 2000. What that means ( including the EULA you agreed to when you open and start to use your xbox ) microsoft is allowed to "update" your xbox when it sees fit! so it could have updates on a game cd/dvd or ( more than likely ) when you're using xbox live! and they don't have to tell you they're doing it either. likely scenario : buy xbox... chip it and then you chuck in halo! you see the start screen and then the xbox freezes and gives you a weird message and then shuts down. You call customer support telling them what happend along with a error message and you guessed it! in a matter of hours you wasted $500 and you've got a state of the art gaming console that doesn't work and that no-one will buy! So to the author of this thread YES buy an xbox, but don't "chip it" :) PS: yes I have a xbox ( and a PC ) and no it's not chipped ;)

2003-09-29 06:20:00 | > I watch all my DVDs on my PC, mainly because I can't afford a widescreen TV :) but also the picture quality you get from a monitor is superb, you'd be losing a great deal of quality if you do a TV-OUT from your PC to your TV . . . trust me . Sure the picture may be bigger but it's not the size that counts, it's the er . . . , quality As a matter of interest, would the picture shrinkage on movies watched on a monitor be the same as it is when watched on a TV with widescreen-type movies? On the TV one can program the DVD player to fill the TV screen (by chopping off the sides of the picture) instead of having the "letterbox effect"; can one do that when playing from a computer DVD player? I would assume it would be exactly the same, but I am just curious to know .

2003-09-29 07:44:00 | Go Playstation cos its got all the coolest games like Metal Gear Solid 2 : Substance, and the new title comin up soon MGS 3, cant wait for that, i would go for ps2, cos the xbox just suddenly becomes a computer with all these "additional" features it possess. To put it simply, i rekon that an X-box is just a computer rolled into a skin tight black suit :D while the ps2 remains slim on its components and does the main job its suited for... PLAYING THE GAMES...... :D instead of "DivX streaming, blah, blah, blah.... :D (i know this will cause a stir amongst u die hard Xbox fans) | vk_dre (195) | |
2003-09-29 08:35:00 | Ahhh... dude, Metal Gear Solid 2 is out on X-Box too. Lo.

2003-09-29 09:45:00 | "DivX Streaming..." Heck no boyo, its not just limited to that! That "tight black box" packs a 733mhz Celeron (iirc), 64MB RAM, A GeForce 4 MX 400, 10 Gig HDD (After you unlock the extra two, thanks Lo.), 100M/Bit ethernet, 8x DVD-ROM... And if you're game enough to install Linux on it, then you've got yourself a nice cheap PC for $450! Adapters for USB Mice/Keyboard to use with the XBox are about $10 each! DVD's are great on the XBox, and yes Susan, you can "Zoom" and chop off the edges of the NTfS DVD's. You can also play any DVD Zone if you have a chip, as well as not needing the DVD Remote Kit! minos#2> It doesnt run a special version of Win2K, rather uses part of the Win2k's kernel (if you can call it that). You can turn off your chip too (At least you can if you dont go with a CheapMod, but something like my Executor 2.2 Pro) so you can use XBox!Live without a problem. In theory, MS can over-write your dashboard, but its so damn easy to install again.. and MS wouldnt over-write the dashboard anyways coz it'd format your HDD, so if they do it to somebody without a chip then they'd really be in the poo there! Secondly, the XBox hasnt ever thrown an error message for me, but hasnt booted once when I installed it incorrectly, and that was my fault. You just CANT beat the XBox!
