179351 2003-09-30 10:07:00 Hi there,

I have an old P200 which is running Mandrake 9.1 exclusively, LILO is the boot manager and a P3 with Windows 98SE.
What I want to do is take the HDD from the old system and install it as a second drive for the P3 and dual boot the system.

I have had a look at some HOW-To's but still unsure.
Will I have to reinstall Linux on the secondary HDD and have LILO install on the MBR of the primary HDD ?
Should the second HDD be the secondary master or is it OK as Slave?

Here is the P3 setup ASUS CUBX Motherboard 4 IDE channels 2x ATA 33, 2xATA66

Primary Master ATA33 Asus CDRW
Secondary Master ATA33 ASUS DVD
Secondary Slave ATA33 ZIP 100 (is being removed)

Third Master ATA66 Seagate 10GB HDD (Win 98SE)

The Secondary drive (ex old P200) is a Western Digital 6GB on Primary ATA33.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

179352 2003-09-30 11:19:00 With my old system celeron 466,jetway motherboard. I had:
win98se as primary master (10 Gig Seagate)
Linux(various distros)primary slave(40Gig Seagate)
cdrom secondary master
Samsung cdrw secondary slave.
I was triple booting with Lilo installed on the MBR.(using Mandrake).
What ever you decide to do, make sure you have made a BOOT disk for Mandrake 9.1.You can then boot into Mandrake and install Lilo on the MBR.Reboot and you should have your choice of Win98 or Mandrake(Mandrake wil be the default).

179353 2003-09-30 11:20:00 I have had problems with LILO when trying to boot to the second IDE channel. I would suggest installing the Linux drive as the slave on channel 1.

I am not sure if the boot floppy would boot linux if you install the drive as above?? If it does, then it would be a simple matter of modifying and rewriting LILO (/etc/lilo.conf). This assuming there are no driver issues with the change of system.

179354 2003-09-30 21:20:00 Thanks for your suggestions.

What I might do is put the linux HDD into the P3 and do a complete reinstall of Mandrake 9.1 as there is nothing really significant on the drive and just start form scratch. Then all the appropriate drivers etc will be set up for the new system.

179355 2003-10-01 02:04:00 That's probably the safest and cleanest way to do it. One way which is a bit quick and dirty is to copy the kernel to a dos partition, and use the LOADLIN.EXE DOS programme to boot linux from DOS. That works nicely. Graham L (2)
179356 2003-10-01 03:51:00 To keep it simple and to be carefull put your linux drive on channel one as secondary as JohnD suggests.Reinstall Mandrake and do not configure Lilo, but just make a boot floppy( WARNING you must make a boot floppy, make two if you can). This way both distros are kept separate.
When you get cheesed off with booting Mandrake from the floppy and feeling more comfortable about your setup, you can then use the Mandrake Control Centre-Boot option to configure Lilo or Grub into the MBR,it's your call.
