179307 2003-09-30 06:24:00 I'm looking for a driver for my modem. I originally had it, when I bought my computer, and I had burnt it onto a CD for backup purposes. The person I bought the computer from claimed that the driver was on the "Windows XP 3 CD". Somehow I have lost my backup CD, so I cannot install the proper driver.

I'm currently using the Aztech Soft56k modem driver, which works, apart from the fact that the speaker does not shut up after it connects. I have worked my way around this by plugging a 3.5mm stereo plug into the speaker out socket on my modem.

My modem is this
PNP Device ID PCI\VEN_127A&DEV_2005&SUBSYS_2005127A&REV_01\3&61AAA01&0&60

and I have searched everywhere for a driver. It seems to be quite a common problem. From what I remember, the original driver I had seemed to be a Win2k one which had been modifed to trick WinXP into thinking it was a WinXP driver.

I know for certain that the modem is a Conexant Soft56 HSF Modem, Vendor 127A. The CD which came with it was designed for Win9x, so it's no help whatsoever.

Any ideas?

179308 2003-09-30 06:50:00 Go here for a driver:-

www.windowsxp-drivers.com

It will be a Conexant HCF modem rather than Conexant HSF.

You will need to register (free) to download the driver.

Why will it be a HCF rather than an HSF? They're different modem's, so I'd suggest that the HSF driver would be the one to go for.

I suggest you go to Conexant's website and download the HSF driver for XP from there.

Or even easier, go to their www.conexant.com Download Page[/url], click "Agree" at the bottom, and download the Windows XP HSF Driver from there.

You might be able to download the HSF driver directly from this link, but if not, try the link above.

179310 2003-09-30 08:46:00 Just I haven't seen an HSF Modem in NZ. All Conexant modems I have seen here have been HCF apart from the odd Conexant USB ones of course.

Maybe it IS an HSF the person has got.

Probably :) They were definitely widely sold in NZ a couple of years ago.

179312 2003-09-30 09:09:00 Good site for identifying the modem is here (www.tldp.org) godfather (25)
179313 2003-09-30 09:13:00 And for the pedantic:

HSP = Host Signal Processor
HCF = Host Controlled Family
HSF = Host Signal Family

179314 2003-09-30 09:42:00 I think the only decent way to find out the model number and type is to open the case up, and read the telepermit sticker on the modem. Not a big deal.

For instance my one was a PureTek PT-3515, and I looked through every computer setting imaginable and never found that crucial info. Then its a case of going to a driver site.

179315 2003-09-30 23:05:00 Thanks for your help everyone. I've already tried the generic drivers on the Conexant website (both HSF and HCF). I have tried the win2k drivers on the CD which was supplied, but they do not work. I have tried the generic Soft56k modem drivers with Windows, and they work, but not properly. The Aztech drivers I'm currently using have the same problem - they work, but the speaker won't shut up after it connects. I am absolutely certain that it's an HSF modem, because they were the drivers I previously had.

This is apparently quite a widespread problem, as I have seen a lot of forum posts about the same problem (doing a google search). I have also tried lots of 3rd party drivers from people who had the same problem as I had, but none of them worked (one of them actually caused my computer to become seriously unstable).

Are there any users out there who bought a computer from Internet City (based in Tauranga) early last year/late 2001, who has a 56k modem, and the driver for it? I suspect that these modems were the cheap ones which they would have used in all their systems. They have since gone out of business, so I cannot ask them for another copy of the driver.

179316 2003-09-30 23:43:00 When I switched to XP, I had 2 Aztech soft modems. Like you I tried every driver available. The best of them would work occasionally and blue-screen the other times.

I did find that they made a satisfying "clunk" sound when I dropped them in the rubbish bin however.
