179019 2003-09-29 20:38:00 All of a sudden, this horrible loud whirring noise has started coming from the computer, about 2 days ago. Everytime I turn it on, it starts going, and it wont stop.

If you hit it, it stops for a while.

According to AIDA32, my CPU temperature is about 45 degrees C.
It was 41 when I first turned it on, and has crepted up to 45, but I suppose thats only normal. Hmm, now its 46.

Are these temperature normal?

Would it be a fan making the noise, or a hardrive?

My computer is about 1 year old, from Samcor.

179021 2003-09-29 20:46:00 Is that too high? All I am doing is searching pressf1, no other programs apart from AIDA32.

179024 2003-09-29 20:56:00 Sounds like you have yourself a dirty fan. Well that was my problem until I cleaned my PC. Check for obvious particles of crap stuck in there... dotcommander (4338)
179025 2003-09-29 20:59:00 It sounds very typical of the power supply fan packing in. Normally the cpu temperature will gradually increase, but it shouldn't be a problem unless the noise (and the fan) stop altogether. When you don't hear the noise you need to just feel with your hand at the psu fan outlook if you can feel air blowing out - as long as you do, shouldn't be a problem.

If the psu fan ssems ok, run the pc with the case panel off, where you should be able to hear better or see, if the cpu fan is causing the noise. Also a good idea to go into the bios and check that you have a warning and/or cutoff if the temp goes over about 55c

179027 2003-09-29 21:59:00 I had a computer once which had a large case fan at the front. However, somehow the USB cable going to the front connectors managed to get pushed into the fan, so the fan was slowly chewing away at the cable, making a horrible noise. It was more of a click-click-click fast-paced noise.

Your CPU temperature seems normal.

179028 2003-09-29 23:13:00 The noise is usually from fan bearings.
As soon as they pick up a bit of lubrication they go quiet again. Often that is why they go quiet after a second power-on.

Its also possible they go quiet when they seize up. Thats bad.

Either way, replace the fan. Major failures can occur with overheating and fans are cheap.
