179672 2003-10-01 22:44:00 I'd like to know what those of you still dealing with Swen spam think of the new version which arrived this morning.
Really scary....set up as if it really is Microsoft's answer to a virus..and will surely panic many people into opening the attachment.
For you lucky ones who haven't seen it, above the fake MS webpage is a red Warning, with big bold :"This message has had 1 or more attachments removed (Q881325.exe.) Please read the Virus Warning.txt.attachment(s) for more information."
Also, the first word in the Subject Line is (Virus?)
It looks very very official... and I guess Newsgroups around the world are headed for another flood of questions.
Sorry my first post isn't on a more cheerful subject.

179673 2003-10-01 23:30:00 It's a good twist making the message look like a Microsoft message and urging you to install this or that.

Reality is MS don't send out Virus Alerts let alone updates.

Sad thing is, it is still catching people out who either get sucked into the message, don't practise safe computing and open anything and everything or don't have upto date anti virus protection.

After several days of no infected messages, last 24 hours has seen over 300 alleged MS alerts in my mail though screening them out at the server certainly does help in preventing them reaching the InBox.

179674 2003-10-02 00:05:00 Hi Laura

Welcome to PF1 .

I received two swen virus emails last weekend but they were intercepted by ZoneAlarm and disabled on download, then detected again by Norton AV when ZA saved them to its Quarantine folder .

From the sound of your post you opened the Email message you received, and that is not a good idea . If your AV program doesn't catch viruses at download time then there is always a possiblity that opening the message will trigger the virus payload .

For safety it is best to delete such messages unopened .

Cheers

179675 2003-10-02 00:57:00 Hi Laura,
Suggest you instal Mailwasher or Mailwasher Pro . You get a list of all your incoming mail and can delete any spam or unwanted mail whilst it is still with your ISP and before you download it.
The false Microsoft messages started several years ago, I have been getting
up to 4 or 5 a day during the past few weeks, please spread the word that Microsoft does not send updates by E Mail.]
Frank.
