179453 2003-10-01 06:23:00 what make is the primary master drive? some hd's have a jumper setting for single i.e. no slave attached, and a different setting for master (slave attached) in particular weston digital are usually configured like this. You also say that in the bios the first device is hdd1, sometimes the first hard drive is designated hdd0 (so hdd1 would be the second drive) pompeymike (4601)
179454 2003-10-01 06:38:00 I assume that the new drive needs to be set up first (ie. fdisked then formatted) hence this error message.

Suggest you do so and see what happens before giving up the minimal floppy disk boot attempt.

All the best

179455 2003-10-01 06:48:00 In the BIOS is there a HDD0 (that's zero) option for the boot drive? Elephant (599)
179456 2003-10-01 20:25:00 Yes there is a HDD 0 setting Elephant, however this computer I am using at present also has a HDD 0 setting which I am not using and this one works fine.

Do you suggest I use HDD 0 for my system HDD?

179457 2003-10-01 20:30:00 Historically, there have been some compatability problems at times between different brands of IDE devices. Try putting the new drive on the secondary IDE port (remove any other devices from this cable), and see if it works. If it does respond, you may have to juggle devices to keep the hard drives seperated. :| wuppo (41)
179458 2003-10-01 20:31:00 Gidday pompeymike, it is a maxtor 20 gig 7200 RPM, re the HDD 0 thing, you are the second person to bring this up so this morning I will change the System HDD to HDD 0 and the new maxtor to HDD 1.

Though from experience I don't think it will make a difference, but who knows, it may fix the problem.

179459 2003-10-01 20:35:00 Tom McB, yeah I should have said first thing that the disk had been setup to one large partition and had been formatted.

But thanks for pointing it out.

179460 2003-10-01 20:39:00 Ah Hah wuppo, you make a good point and even though both drives are Maxtor, therefore they should get on well together, nevertheless before major surgery, I will try it.

Thanks for the post.

179461 2003-10-01 22:03:00 I had a similar problem installing a new WD 80GB hard drive. If you are using windows XP then make sure that the virus protection in the bios is disabled as this will stop xp loading. waynecarp (883)

hi curly, it will make all the difference, if windows is on your primary master drive then hdd0 *must* be set in the boot order for it to work

good luck
